What would it do if I took my used oil and put it in my oil tank for the house? Not talking an unGodly amount, just the occasional 3 gallons or so when my used oil container gets full and I just pour it into the oil tank for the house?

How big is your tank?

The worst thing is: Used oil is classified as HM. Mainly because of all the weird combustion by-products. Next will be the metals in solution and the bits not in solution. Last will be the sludgey storage goo.

If you were to do this - just throwing this out there: I would let the oil settle for a good while, then pour off the "good" stuff into a second container, then filter it into a third container.

Maybe only use a gallon at a time or something.

Mixing: come up with a scheme - think about adding the oil right before a refill with the heater OFF or something.......

Clogged nozzle heads in your oil burner. Also clogging of the oil burners filter.

I considered this too for a while but I asked someone who services oil burners/furnaces and he said it was a bad idea. Some oil burners/furnaces like those used in auto repair shops can be designed to burn used motor oil. Some shops do in fact heat their garages with used motor oil.

ok i appreciate it. Actually never thought about the stuff that was in the oil dummy :)

So will recycle it like I always do.

Thanks all

Buy a burner designed for burning used motor oil. It should fit your furnace easy enough. I imagine that the servicing is not too much different. It doesn't appear to be any more complicated than a regular oil burner. The filter on my pal's setup doesn't appear to be large or anything. Just a LENZ thingie.

A little mixed in shouldn't cause any problems. I was running waste oil in my topedo heater last year, other than the stink, it ran fine. This year though I had some problems with it shutting off and such, probly a clogged jet. I ran some powerservice diesel fuel treatment in it and some fresh kerosene and everything has been fine. But if it was the main heater in the house, I wouldn't chance it.

isnt my house anyway just renting a room but have free reign over it. Will just recycle it.
