What to expect when switching Mobil 1 to Amsoil?

I have used Mobil 1 5W-20 in my wife's 2006 Pilot since its first oil change. Her Pilot now has about 22K miles. I have always followed the Honda OCI (~5K miles) and have no plans to extend the OCI at this time. Mobil 1 seems to make the engine run smoother and with less noise.

I have made the decision to try Amsoil 0W-20 25K/1 year synthetic oil in this vehicle during the next oil change. I plan to pull a sample for UOA (Blackstone Labs) from the existing oil at that time, which is something that I have not done before.

Should I expect an improvement in mpg after making the switch to Amsoil? Is it likely that my engine noise will be even less with Amsoil than it currently is with Mobil 1? What changes should I expect on my next UOA after making the switch from Mobil 1 to Amsoil?

I can't imagine why you would see an improvement in mpg. Let us know about the noise. Any comment about that would just be speculation.

I would be surprised if you tell any difference.

A few months back when we had 3 Honda Elements, I put Platinum 5W20, Mobil 1 5W20, and Amsoil 0W20 in them. I ran each for a service interval of 5K per Honda, and I could not tell any difference in any of them. Mileage and noise was all about the same. I'm pretty sure that if I would have wanted to push it on out to 10K, 15K, the Amsoil might have fared better. After all it's claim to fame is long drains. But in all honesty, in a 5K run I could tell no difference. I did not send any of them in for a UOA.

I didn't really think anything significant would happen after making the switch to Amsoil, especially since I have no desire to extend the OCI, but wondered if anyone had noted any changes on their vehicle when making the switch to Amsoil. I will update this post after my next oil change. Thanks for your replies.

I'm doing the same change right now...

Two cars from Mobil 1 5-20 to Amsoil ASM

2006 Dodge Charger 5.7 HEMI with 11,500 on the ODO changed to ASM today (will chang at 20K on the ODO and then every 10K after that).

2006 Mazda3 2.3 will be changed in a few months at 30K to ASM from Mobil 1 5-20. Again, change every 10K.

I was doing 5K OCI's with WIX filters in both. Only UOA was at 20K on Mazda3 and it was fine (TBN was 4.0 per Blackstone).

I will get UOA's on both at the 10K change just to make sure I can continue to go 10K without issue. I think I should without a problem but I'd like to get one UOA each just to see the TBN on both.

I'll post both, but it's gonna be a while since my wife and I only drive about 15K-18K a year in each vehicle (65%-75% highway)

BTW...Guess which car is mine....

You will probably get whiplash when you take off from the first traffic light!

Well, maybe not. The most noticeable differences are in the extended drain and/or severe usage categories. You may see a bit better fuel economy--if you keep track. You may see a bit lower operating temperatures at extreme speeds.

I think the advantage of Amsoil is longer drain intervals, which could really consolidate maintenance.

I think that anyone saying they notice a difference is just the placebo affect. Unless a UOA was done or a engine problem arose, I don't know if many could tell the difference.

You don't get the hemi, Punkey????

Nope...with kids in the near future, my wife wanted her next car to be a fast, American four door that could handle a family. She REFUSES to drive a minivan...

Hemi Charger fit the bill...I'm pleased to say the least. Although I don't drive it daily, I do take it every chance I get and it is a fun ride. With it's NAV and rear DVD it's almost a minivan...kinda...

She did let me "modify" the exhaust for a meaner sound...we both like it!!

That's the precise reason I went with ASM. I have no doubt M1 would have provided years and years of trouble free service...I just wanted to extend the OCI's. 10K for now and hopefully 15K UOA's permitting.

A 15K OCI will put me at 10-12 months per OCI which would be great!

Expect a lighter wallet and that is about it. M1 0W20 and 5W20 are great products and I doubt that in this case Amsoil can really improve onit much if at all.

Just a quick note: What makes your engine quiet isn't necessarily what's good for wear protection...
