I just recently got a 1996 Integra GSR. It has around 222,000kms. I'm going to do an oil change soon and was wondering what kind of oil I should use? I heard I should be using those high milage oil or should I be using synthetic oil? 5w30 or 10w30?

I'm not sure what kind of oil the previous owners used so I'm going to assume they been using non-synthetic oil. I heard that if the car hasn't been using synthetic oil for most of it's life, some people don't recommend switching to synthetic. The synthetic may clean up sludge so well, that it may uncover leaks.

Also does it really matter what kind of oil filter I get. I saw some oil filter at canadian tire for high mileage cars by FRAM and I think it was more than double the price of the motomaster oil filter.

Any recommendation would be appreciated

First off, does it have any leaks or known consumption? Have you been able to see under the valve cover or at least take a peek beneath the oil filler cap? I would use 5w30 as that's what Honda recommends for all temperatures in the Integra. In an unknown history vehicle that's clean under the valve cover, I would still run one round of Auto-RX just for the seal & ring benefits if you plan on switching to synthetic. That's what I did with my '95 LS even though it's nice and clean under the valve cover, I didn't want any unexpected leaks. Best of luck with your new ride, I think you'll like the B18C1

If you have any other questions about the car, feel free to message me.

Those Fram high mileage filters seem to be more about marketing than being helpful. They have some kind of "time-released gel" inside. I dunno. The Quaker State filters are made by Purolator I believe and seem to be a good filter. I usually just get the Motomaster though. I doubt you'd see much difference.

I would think if your car isn't burning oil then you don't really need high-mileage oil. It seems more geared towards cars leaking a little bit and helping stop the leak. You can use it for an extra bit of protection, wouldn't hurt anything, but that's up to you. I'm not a big fan of synthetics but then I'm cheap and don't run my car hard.

I don't know about you.

Nice ride!
I've always had a desire to own a GSR. Every Honda engine likes revs, but this one is really over the top. Almost like an S-2000.
Anyway, since Hondas don't normally suffer oil leaks, except maybe around the easily replaced valve cover gasket (o-ring), and since Honda engines make almost any oil look good (check the UOA forum here), I wouldn't worry much about oil selection.
I would use a Grp III, like PP, 5w30. Note that many indie Honda shops use a 10w30 for everything. If you wanted to go a little more exotic, there is always the reasonably priced GC. It seems to be good in my VTEC Accord, and half the fun of using GC is finding it.
Good luck with your new toy. Those BMW drivers have no idea what they are missing.

I'm not sure how to check for leaks so I'm not sure if my engine is leaking or not. I also haven't taking a look under the valve cover or beneath the oil filler cap.
I'm just worried if there is sludge in the right now and if I use some kind of oil or engine cleaner it may start leaking and cost me money to fix.

How does the Auto-RX work btw?

If it is not leaking now, I doubt that an oil change will make it leak. Can you see oil drips under where you park the car? Are there visible leaks under the hood? If not, you probably need not worry about oil leaks.
Look under the oil fill cap. Is there sludge? If not, don't worry about it.
Put a decent oil in it, and enjoy your new toy.

Canadian Tire house brand oil - plus a WIX Part #51334 oil filter. If the drained oil looks nasty & chunky, change often... every 3K.

I am positive that Quaker State & Penzoil oil filters are made by Fram. I prefer Purolator or NAPA Gold(WIX).

Penzoil filters are made by Fram;
The Quaker State filters are by Purolator.
Last time I checked, anyway.
Don't know if the QS is the exact same as the regular Purolator though.

Filters I've used in my Integra in order of preference:
Honda A01 Filtech (harder to find, but I have sources if you need some)
Napa Gold/Wix 1334
SuperTech (only available in the U.S.)
Valvoline

I have a bunch of other brands in my stash but I haven't tried them yet so I'm not able to provide any opinion on them, except for the fact that I really like the way the Green HAMP filters look

PP = Pennzoil Platinum.
GC = German Castrol (A nickname for European Formula 0w30 Castrol Syntec)
SM and SL are API ratings. SM is the most current rating.
