Suggestions above sound good; I always ran VWB 5w30 in mine while I had it.

I have a 97 2.5L TJ here that I've taken care of for about 6 years.

These engines throw higher metals with some 30wt oils. Pennzoil Yellow and High mileage 10w30 would be an upgrade. I would not run Supertech without getting a UOA, but in the end I just wouldn't run it. The 2.5 really works hard moving these bricks around.

I have PYB 10w40 in the Jeep here right now, cold weather be [censored]. I always look at 4.0 and 2.5 UOAs. Seems like these engines like 40 weight oil, and regular Pennzoil does very well. I've seen great results on here with Pennzoil 30wts also but I've seen alot of people unhappy with other 30wts, especially Mobil 1 for whatever reason.

Gasbuggy, are there any UOAs using Valvoline Maxlife 10W30 (red bottle) out there? That what I just put in mine and it seems to like it but it could just be all in my mind.

It's Calif and it'll get hot before the next change ... Any odd noises at cold start? That's enough miles to step up one weight...

I'd consider 10W-40 Maxlife if it makes any rattles ...

Always use a good filter with a proven ADBV like Wix or Baldwin. Keeping the galleries full at night so it starts lubing quick is always better

Run oversized filter if you can find a fitment. Adds some capacity and a bit of cooling surface. Plus, the extra media will reduce cold oil back pressure on start-up, and it'll hold more dirt

They seem to like Maxlife 10w30, that is what I ran in my girlfriends Jeep the majority of the time prior to putting 10w40 PYB in. I got the PYB for free which why I changed. I've also seen good UOA's from regular Valvoline 10w30.

Here is an example with MaxLife 10w30.
