I used 24 cubic feet of water during June and July (very cool months this year). 1 cubic foot equals 7.45 gallons. My cost? About $150. I know that since July my water usage has doubled. I expect Octobers bill to be over $300.
Just seems to be way too much.

I re-read this a few times after doing calculations and I'm assuming you mean hundred cubic feet?

That doesn't work in southern Ca. After about 2 or 3 days off no water the grass will be brown. I do adjust my watering times according to how hot it is.

My water bill runs between about 50 - 75 a month but includes sewer charge.

My St Augustine is well established and has a deep root structure. It's survived 65+ days of 100°+ temps and low humidity. Twice a week watering is starting to show some signs of yellowing.

I would prefer if they switched to odd/even days. I think my lawn would look okay on that.

Many are under three years old and just won't make it if I don't water. That would be a huge waste of money as the cost of all those to obtain was easily over $1500. Even letting the grass go brown has it's costs too. When ever I have done that the recovery to my grass is a long process with weeds and mosses getting a foothold from the weakened grass.

My oaks and elms are mature and still need water. One of my neighbors down the street recently lost a post oak that was probably 100 years old.
I lost a cedar elm that was about 40 years old a few years ago and removing it was a big hassle.
And then there's the foundation.
Our soil has a high clay content. Don't keep it watered and the soil will dry and contract and you have foundation problems.
That's why the majority of us do not have basements....well that and the frost line is only about 4 inches deep.

Oops...you are correct. 100 cubic feet (1 consumption rate)=748 gallons.

This rate structure is opposite with conservation, the more wasteful results in lower rates !

The water rate in Irvine, CA is to encourage conserve water.

Tier.........Percent of Allocation Cost per ccf
Low Volume....0 - 40%................$0.91
Base Rate.....41 - 100%...............$1.22
Inefficient...101 - 150%...............$2.50
Excessive....151 - 200%...............$4.32
Wasteful.....201+%....................$9.48

My water bill is every 2 months. The last bill was $225 which includes the wastewater and treatment fees. I used 18 units (1 unit=748 gallons) of water which is about 13,464 gallons. The rate is based on multiple tier system which if you use 4 units or less then its tier 1. If you use more than 4 units you pay the 4 units from tier 1 and then tier 2 calculates from that point on. I always dip into the tier 2.

Something to note is the wastewater and treatment fee or discharge fee. Based on how much water you use, the same units apply for the discharge with the same multi tier system. Except the discharge fee is about double water usage cost. So if your water usage cost was $50, the discharge fee would be $100 which brings the total to $150.

With a river running though town we don't pay for water, there is no meter at the gate, only a tap. We pay for the service, not the volume. In summer we do have restrictions, but just because the filters need more maintenance with more alge in summer.

$145 (Oz) PA to be connected to the water.
$250-$300 PA for the water.

$25 PA for stormwater connection.
$677 for sweage.

Out of all the folks posting in this thread....I think your water billing is the only one that is about the same as mine.

Wow....seems to be very expensive.

No meter here, I guess a service charge is included in our municipal taxes for utilities (sewer, garbage etc.) But it isn't much.

In my neck of the woods, water conservation is not a public policy priority - yet. But that does not preclude individual's from exercising some personal restraint in the consumption of resources.
