My idea of performance is a car/truck that can go atleast 200K in milage. I car/truck that over time stays solid without the creeks and noises that come with a vehical that is ageing and a motor that is easy work on with general maintance.Joe

Performance is a vague word that can mean many different things. I'd rather be specific. The following comes to mind, in no particular order:

handling
road holding
braking power
acceleration
efficiency
power
reliability
durability
comfort
convenience
build quality
materials
features/equipment

I suppose a car that does fine in the particular areas that one finds relevant could be considered a well performing vehicle. Depending on individual needs and wants "performance" is in the the of the beholder.

I consider any car that can do the 3G's as a performance car
1G or better Braking
1G or better Cornering
1G or better accelerating.
I'm lucky enough to have a car that will exceed the 3G criteria.

Acceleration, cornering, and braking that is above the majority of the other cars on the road. I hate low-performance drivers more than low-performance cars, though!

Just to point out the original poster expressly did not ask "what is your idea of a performance car," a term which is generally and commonly used in regard to power and handling.

As for what is my "idea of a performance car," well it's of course a 1987 Ruf 911 CTR "Yellow Bird."

For me 'go fast' performance is kind of a moot point on cars and trucks, as my antique 83 Suzuki would do 120 mph in the 1/4 mile, and driving at illegal but not highly illegal speeds I would still get over 40 mpg.

We had an '89 Buick that we gave up on due to body rust issues, but it managed to run another 6 years and 130,000 km without even an oil change. I think it was dino 10W40 in there from 1994, ran until it was traded in in 2000. That's performance in my book.

Why don't you just say Porsche for crypes sake?

Why? Because I could outrun several Porsche models with my run-of-themill Scirocco and because the Porsche name by itself doesn't especially impress me. If you don't know about Ruf's creations, I suggest you research the topic, because it's quite fascinating. The Yellow Bird outperformed a stock 959, for crying out loud!

Those RUF porkers are the business, Gemballa also make some stormers of note although they don't look as good as RUF's creations....

I tend to agree with the OP's concept of performance. I'm not so much interested in the "go fast" performance as I am reliability and many, many miles. For me personally, the car that "performs" the best isn't the one that does the 3g's, it's the one I can drive 300K miles and, besides regular maintenance and tuneups, only have to replace a timing belt, water pump, and maybe some cv joints, for example. That satisfies MY need for performance!

Of course, we all have different needs and wants. I'm not trying to impose my idea of performance on anyone else...that's just me.

Simple man with a simple mind in a simple shanty.

Simply:

1. Start.

2. Run.

3. Stop when brakes apllied.

4. Repeat for a long long time.

Simple

I like bdai's story and 'definition'...I think this is much more entertaining and impressive than a 'supercars' abilities....I get a kick out of engine survival stories....FIL just stopped driving a 1985 Nissan P/U that has seen nothing but top-ups with Tech 2000 and 'AutoPrix' oil for the last 5-6 years, and nothing but short-trip driving and idling...still going strong...
