What is this OE oil on the AMS website?

That's a good question. We've been waiting for Amsoil to add the "Click here for more information" pages to the OE oils so we can get a comparison of sorts. Surprised me that they would show the new offerings before having the info pages ready.

The pages are ready. The official release date is Nov 1. Pretty sure Amsoil just wanted to allow people/dealers to order early.

The NEW XL has a more robust additive package. It will be interesting to see a comparison of viscometric properties (and eventually) UOA's of the two lines.

Pablo: Would it be safe to assume that the OE is equivalent to the old version of XL (which was an awesome oil) and the new XL is higher up the product line ?

I wonder if that's good or bad. I guess it either means that they really cheapened the add pack compared to XL and/or that XL uses a really expensive add pack and OE's is just average. While I have no idea what they're using or what their margins are, I would have rathered they take a more balanced approach. A great base oil with a weak add pack ends up mediocre as does a poor base oil and great add pack. Though I really know nothing about what base oil or add pack suppliers they use. I'll just assume Amsoil knows what they're doing and I'm sure it's still a good oil either way because you can make a solid oil for $4/qt wholesale. I wonder how both the OE and new XL are going to fair. The old XL was a very good oil.

B/C Amsoil buys a large amount of base oils from XOM, would it be fair to guess that the base oil is 'Visom' group-III+?

I thought I read at aone point that Amsoils's group-III's were from Petro-Canada, but I don't think they'd be robust enough for this new application...any ideas, Pabs?

Pablo has stated in the past that they have a variety of sources. XOM was/is probably a large supplier of PAO (at least pre-Katrina) but that doesn't necessarily hold for group III.

OE oils are formulated to the same high standards as the XL oil but without the extra additive boost required for extended-drain performance.

OE is designed for customers who want to use a synthetic but are not interested in extending the drain intervals in their vehicles past the oem recommendations.

Anyone who says this base oil comes from this supplier and that base oil comes from another supplier don't know what they are talking about. I have talked to the people in charge and they will not disclose that information. They work closely with all base oil and additive suppliers looking for the best products in the marketplace.

The other oil companies are locked into using base oils and additives developed within their companies.

I agree with this. Sometimes people tell me stuff, but it's not always 100% correct. You can tell by the tanker cars not all oils come from the same source at Amsoil!!

how do they maintain a consistent product then?

or should I be asking:

How important is supplier in maintaining a consistent product?

The base oil is controlled with specifications, just like any ingredient. The supplier controls and checks the raw materials. Amsoil checks it upon receipt.
