What is an E-Core?

If you have seen the posted pictures of various brands of spin-on filters with a plastic cage supporting the filter material instead of metal, that is an E-Core. Its made by Champ Labs.

They have been around about 6 years and have mostly done well. Recently one member here has reported problems. The fans of other brands are trying to panic people into abandoning them mostly due to one bad report. Oh yes, there is the other one where somebody blocked off the bypass on a Chevy and had a problem several years ago. Like anything new and different, many reject them.

The only lower priced filters with a thread end bypass are the Champ made Ecores and Motorcraft. The Motorcrafts are made by Purolator, but Ford insists on a thread end bypass. GM puts the bypass in the engine to eliminate dome end bypasses.

Not sure why they are called e-cores, as a metal core will rust away in a landfill, or can be recycled easy. The plastc core will be around for several hundred years...

Also now known as the "BCOD" or Blue Can Of Death :)
Seriously, I've never had a problem with Champ Labs, I use Delco PF48's all the time (old style) but they literally went out of their way to make a filter with WORSE construction then Fram Extra/Tough guards.

Same here. I recently found the old style AC Delco PF48's with the metal core at Walmart and bought them all.

Yeah seriously.
One E-core failure shouldn't mean that all E-cores are created equally.
I'd run an E-core anyday for a normal OCI.

Last I checked they were black, they havent been blue for many many years.

I have used ecores since they have been out and have cut most of them open. I wish I had joined this forum in the past to post them all. I post every filter I cut open on this board. I actually have a ST16 ecore I am about to post.

Never one problem, EVERY filter brand will have a flaw every now and then. Even the godly purolator.

The problem with escraps are when they have a failure your engine gets a media lunch, others with a real center core protects from that, and the "others" failure isn't engine threatening.

True, but none of us has access to the actual failure rates of various filters, nor the quality control parameters of said filters, so we are forced to make decisions based on perceived quality vs cost.

I perceive that there are low cost filters of high quality (readily available in the marketplace), so I decide not to buy low cost filters that I believe are low quality, nor do I recommend low cost filters that I believe are low quality.

Supertechs are black....Champs are blue. Still the same acronym :) Call it the "Black Can Of Death" if you like....
