New to forum due to a new to me 2003 Chevy Silverado 4.8 V8. After first 20k or so of dealership 10W30 oil changes at 1500-3k, vehicle was switched to Mobil 1 5w30 and Wix oil filters changed at every 5k. When 0w30 edition came out it was switched to that. 70k on clock.

I don't like changing brands of oil, so I plan on staying with the Mobil 1. What I'm wondering about is using the oil life monitor. I just towed a 5000# trailer 2k miles and have driven another 3k of short trips as well as up to 90 miles. I still haven't triggered the change oil soon message. Should I change it or wait on the message? Should I change to the EP version? I noticed on the back of the 0w30 container it says good for max oil change interval, but the EP bottle states to follow oil life monitor. It's not using a drop and the oil looks cleaner than any car I've ever owned. Truck is operated in Montana. Thanks.

You can stay with the regular M1, and change according to OLM. Like panthermike said, the oil can certainly handle it.

The OLM should call for a change while the M 1 has a ways to go. You might wait for the OLM and then have a OUA done.

I used Pennzoil YB since it came in cardboard cans. I recently put Mobil1 in my truck planning to extend my 3 month OCI's.

I would say overkill if you're not doing around 10,000 mile OCI's. Then, I could see using it. Otherwise, the regular flavor is fine.

I have a friend that doubles his OLM with M1 5-30. I'm not suggesting you do that, but it has worked well for him. Also another friend has a 99 Silverado 5.3 and goes 12-15K on M1 5-30, and at presant has 260K. Point is there is plenty of life in the 5-30 to do what ever you want.

I'm using M1 0w-30, but it's in my (non-turbo) 4 cyl Subaru and I don't do any towing, so it's hardly a comparison.

Follow your OLM they have shown to be very accurate. Most are based on calculating RPMs, number of starts, temps, severity of driving, etc. They have shown to be accurate, and unless your vehicle requires synthetic, they're calibrated for conventional oil. So the UOAs done on synthetic oils that were changed based upon the OLM (which were calibrated for conventional) show the oil had plenty of life left in it.

If it were my vehicle, I'd run the synthetic (no need for the EP), and change it when the OLM said to.

I know you said it isn't using any oil, but keep an eye on it and top it up when needed. Topping up not only helps to keep the oil level right, but it also replaces some additives that might have been getting worn out

keep it goin man, i have run that oil for 7300 one time, thats with four hauls of no less than 8000lbs and short trip and some road trips into idaho and a couple hunting trips out into cardwell there. my boss has run it for like 8000 miles once in his 6.0liter gmc

i was at first when i first got my truck, now i just realized it saves me alot of money. especially when i get to use synthetics. GM has got it figured out very well, follow the OLM with confidence. when you start getting up there in miles like 10000 miles or one year, ya change it, but until then no worries
