What are your driving pet peeves?

timish Re your post of:

People who drive massive pickups with Rancho lifted suspensions and/or Hummers that navigate over speed bumps on residential roads at a pace that would be fitting for an individual driving a Ferrari F40 navigating same speed bumps. Why own the offroad vehicle if you are going to limp over speedbumps an axle at a time while doing 2MPH?

I disagree with you about the slow large vehicle over speed bump or any road hole or bump. If you have a bad back any bump in the road regardless of the size of your vehicle feels like a knife to your back. I have driven over speed bumps at 2MPH while thinking curses at who-ever was involved with having them installed. One of the problems is that the pain these road jolts gives you can stay with you for many hours afterwards.

This has been implied in some other postings, but my major pet peeve is this:

People who think they are driving big rigs because, when they make a left turn (for example), they start turning out right before turning left, making for some close calls for drivers in the lane to the right.

Good point. My lane is mine up to the cross walk. If you are making a left, you need to be to the right of the center lane by the time you pass the edge of the road you are turning off. I hate it when I have to stop back from a stop sign because somebody is either too stupid or lacks respect for others to stay out of my lane.

If your back is that bad, you shouldn't be riding in a truck of any kind, let alone a lifted one with offroad suspension...

I've got a couple more that you guys reminded me about.
1. Trying to get off a congested highway where nobody is going fast yet nobody will let you move to the right because they don't want to lose their space. I'm just going to the exit, let me off.
2. Drivers that don't know how to work a rotary (or roundabout depending on where you are in the world). I hate it when someone stops in the circle to let someone in. It just doesn't work that way. Horn, middle finger, what else have you.

I was amazed the other day driving on a pretty snowy/slippery major highway. A slow car was doing 20 MPH which was a bit too slow for conditions. I attempted to pass and the driver tried to actually block me pushing me over into the break down lane.

I went 30-35MPH after and anyone who wanted to pass me(speedy pickup trucks going 50MPH+) I moved over a bit and let off on the accelerator.

I hate how people feel like they own the road. Just move over and quit the ego stuff.

Exactly. Lead, follow, or get out of the way. Very simple rules that apply more often than not.

People want to drive under their terms ..always. The thought of being reactive in a cooperative manner just isn't in our mind set.

I had a driver stop dead in front of me from 50 mph on a straight two lane road with nothing but hayfields on both sides.

She was letting a snowmobile cross.

The road has a super-duper right of way over sled trails which appear out of nowhere, have no warning signs, etc. At least the snowmobiler looked as suprised as I was that she was doing that!

I had one stop in the middle of a 4-lane highway. I was waiting to turn left onto that highway. She apparently thought she was doing me a favor. Only problem, the traffic in the other lane didn't stop and she ended up making me wait even longer as the queue she created finally dispersed.

I started motioning for her to move on.

The only other thing I can think of is that she really wanted to turn right at that intersection, but couldn't because there was a lot of traffic in the right lane and she was in the left lane, so she just stopped as she tried to figure out what to do, because, you know, stopping in the middle of the road when you're confused while driving is always the safest thing to do...

Had to be in the trunk, it was part of the job.

One time when I was a kid and my Father was driving, we were on a road that snaked right and left and crossed a train track many times. There was a woman driver ahead of us and she crossed the track and then stopped as we were crossing, leaving us stopped right on the track. The second time the road crossed the track she did it to us again. My dad commented about it, something like what the heck does this woman think she is doing coming to a complete stop AFTER she crosses the track? After she got us two times in a row we stopped and waited for her to go each time before we crossed the track. To this day I have no Idea why that woman stopped each time after she crossed the track. BTW that was back before cell phones, so she could not have been on the phone.

^Moving a filled fish tank? That's all I can come up with for a reason why anyone would need to stop after hitting some bumps.

So I just had to go by the school with its 20MPH speed limit. The authorities had apprehended some crazy fool that had violated it. Forwarned, the dolt in front of me in the Cadilac did about 10MPH the whole way past the school.

I figure the best place for a crazy fool wanting to go faster than I am is in front of me. Let him meet the cop first.
