What are you working on today?

Got a call for a jerky 1-2 gear change on a L90H. Went to check the level and just happened to remove the filler cover and the transmission was overfilled with this liquid. Asked around at the site and someone had filled it with around 20L of washer fluid. Did two changes and it was still rough and when the lockup locks it jerks. Probably needs a rebuild.. only 5600 hours too.

Some people are too dumb to get out of bed unsupervised. What an expensive blunder.

Finally working on the last steps of restoring/modernizing the interior of my 1998 Firebird, which was one of those projects that was originally going to just be fixing a couple broken bits but somehow turned into a year-long ordeal. Pulled the passenger seat (which is getting replaced) and center console which is getting cleaned up, the top section replaced with one that isn't broken, leather-wrapped console lid with a metal frame that also shouldn't break again, leather e-brake boot, and the shifter from a 5th-gen Camaro.

(I know the e-brake boot is the wrong color. Some leather dye will fix that!)

2018 Chevy Suburban, Extracted 3 broken exhaust manifold bolts, New gaskets & ARP Bolts, Replaced left engine mount.

Plugging away at a 2012 Ford F150 Ecoboost long block job, Customer bought a reman trough O'Reilly.....Wanted nothing to do with that decision as I recommended a low mileage pullout. This is killing the owner financially with all the small things it's needed.....
*Valve Covers.....The old ones are clogged up with sludge.
*Fuel Injectors....They will void warranties over reusing GDI Injectors.
*Both Injector sub harnesses....Old one's connectors crumbled to dust.
*Both Turbo's where shot.
*Got a good used oil cooler.
*All 4 VVT solenoids.

The gaskets sent look & feel cheap, The RTV job on the timing cover & oil pan is crappy.

This is likely the last non-OE reman engine I do, If this engine is a dud....I'm going to charge the same labor again as I have no control over parts procurement.

Yesterday was primarily a link bar day. Link bars, for the most part, make for easier days. At some point during the week I started drilling another batch of 304 stainless logs with a new spade drill setup....got through 11 of 20 and 3 cutting bits before the vibration backed the screws out of the bits, causing the bit to come lose and quit cutting. Now waiting on more screws and cutting bits. 😅 I'm getting 3 logs out of a cutting bit, as opposed to 1.5 logs out of a high speed steel drill. Still not optimal but definitely an improvement. I've attached some pictures of the spade drill setup. After getting as far as I could with the stainless drilling, the lathe chuck had become very hard to open and close. I had to remove the fingers, thoroughly clean out all the accumulated chips and gunk, and reassemble. Probably hadn't been done before and the lathe is a year old. Works good as new now.

A few weeks ago, I saw a small leak from the left headlight washer pump on a BMW. I love these washers. They have really strong pressure, and since the fluid in BMW is heated, it clears the headlights in no time in winter from snow, slush, etc. I have bad eyesight and wear RGP contact lenses, so during the night, good lights are a must (both BMW and VW have HID lights, which are exceptional. Sequoia has LED, and let's say, there is A LOT to wish for. Honda, well, it is a horror show.).
The way the work is that when the lights are on, every 3rd windshield spray activates headlight washing. I changed that through software to every 5th time. I guess, after 14 years, the gasket inside the cylinder gave up.
Got FEBI aftermarket through FCP Euro, $29, and takes maybe 30min to replace. Most of the time is spent on removing the wheel, plastinc protection, then it is easy peasy:

Removing plastic cover takes 2sec:

Most work is about removing wheel etc.

Here it is how it looks underneath. It clips into position:

Old leaking pump. The way it works is that the main pump pushes fluid, and the pressure pushes the cylinder out. Once the pump stops, the spring inside returns the cylinder to the closed position. And that spring is really strong. I could not take it out with one hand and take a

Installed a Hella TE26 OE-Connect horn kit in our 2006 Spectra. Weak horns are the bane of my existence, not to mention potentially unsafe, so $30 seemed like a tiny pittance for a set of plug and play horns that actually WORK.

I highly recommend the upgrade if you have a compatible model, I got mine from Fleet Pride. Looks like they drop shipped them right from Hella, took a little over a week to arrive from the East Coast.

Made several adjustments to my Craftsman 42cc chainsaw in preparation for some serious cutting later this week. My goal is to get the remainder of my FIL's Hackberry tree cut up, no matter how long it takes me. The remainder of this tree is a job for a gas saw. The Makita 40V will have to sit this round out.
