Last October, when the weather in The Swamp finally turned fairly dry, I went with some suggestions here and waxed with Meguiar's new NXT. The stuff went on and buffed up easily. As some members commented, durability seemed to be only fair.

Well, it's been 3 months, so I dug the bottle out, shook it up thoroughly . . . and got a shock.

The wax has turned to water!

Not completely. But where before it was a thick cream, as liquid wax ought to be (and as the Gold Class always was no matter how long it sat), the NXT has turned into cottage cheese in a thin fluid. It spread on okay, dried to a haze, and buffed off fine, leaving a slippery finish and no streaks on my gold paint.

Is this stuff still safe to use? Anybody else have this experience?

I've never heard of that product separating like that. It's like the wax has been sitting around for a long time.

If it came back like new, it's prolly OK. If its still lumpy, I'd either trash it and buy another one or call Meguiars and ask if they'll replace it.

Oh, I shook it up -- more than once. Certainly the Gold Class came out of the bottle like a vanilla ice-cream shake. (Well, okay, exaggeration, but not by much.)

No, it didn't freeze or overheat. I bought it in October, long after the Recent Unpleasantness in New Orleans. It's been stored in a closet, and there's no cold draft or water heater in there. Same place I kept the Gold Class.

for sure i'd contact meguiars. tell them what happened and see what they say. i'm sure with the reputation they have, they'd be glad to replace the product for you. maybe even throw in some coupons as well. tell them you posted the problem on this site, and the other members are waiting to see how thier company resolved this issue.

Great company, Im almost certain theyd replace it and throw you some schwag(samples and whatnot) along with the new bottle. Just call and ask them about it.

Their products as well as thier service is what makes Meguiars the best! BTW Im not paid to say this, Im just really satisfied with all of my experince with Megs.

BTW I dont find the NXT to be as long lasting here in Florida as I might have hoped, but still a great product.

Thanks, all. I'll give Meguiar's a call, or post to their forum, and let you know what I find out.

Update on the NXT --

Tuesday was dry for New Orleans, so after washing the car I set out to wax it. I took the bottle of NXT and shook it -- I mean I was really workin' it, baby!

When I opened and upended it, the wax on the pad was a thick cream again. I had to keep shaking it periodically, however, or the wax began to show bubbles and watery fluid mixed in, but I guess that's just the way it goes with this stuff.

Thanks for all the input!

I love NXT, but the one odd thing I find with this product is that the older your bottle is, the harder it is to remove the product without seeing lots of streaking and greasiness.

Whenever I buy a fresh bottle, and apply it on my black car, it buffs off very nicely and leaves no smearing or greasiness or cloudiness behind. But once the bottle has "aged" a bit, this stuff becomes much harder to work with, and I need to keep buffing and spraying detail spray in order to clean up the mess. (when it's done it looks fantastic though!)

The first bottle I bought, I began using it almost every week or two and put on about 17 coats that first year, with no problems. Then at the end of that year I put on a coat and it was messy to remove. I bought a brand new one and it worked very well.

This was last fall, and I tried using that same bottle last weekend, and the troubles started again! With the first bottle, I thought maybe I was not shaking it enough before each use, and that the problem lied in the fact that I was at the end of a bottle with uneven chemistry (due to not shaking it enough each time I used it) But now I believe that this product simply doesn't have a very long shelf life.

I absolutely love how it hides the scratches on my black paint, and definitely makes it shine better than Zaino Z5 or Meguiar's other longtime favorite, Gold Class. But it sucks to keep having to buy fresh bottles long before the actual product is used up!

Interesting comments. I had a conversation with a local distributor today who used to sell Meguiars. He said the biggest problem they had with their products was the lousy shelf life.

To get good pricing they had to buy in large qty's, but it was always more expensive than other brands and inventory didn't turn over quickly. Someone (car dealer, body shop, etc) would make a large purchase and would return some of the products because they worked poorly or were just water and hardened product at the bottom of the bottle. After too many complaints, they stopped selling Meguiars completely and focused on another brand that doesn't have a limited shelf life.

I put another coat of NXT on my hood tonight, but this time I've decided to let it dry overnight and then buff it off in the morning. Maybe that's part of the problem, maybe once my NXT gets old, it just takes way longer than normal to dry. So even if I am able to buff it off almost right away when it's new, I can't do that same technique once the product is a few months old.

I didn't end up leaving it on overnight, I left it on for about 90 minutes. It did buff off easier and wasn't as greasy, however this morning when I pulled it out of the garage and out into the brighter light (cloudy skies though) I could see a lot of cloudiness in the paint! Spraying it with detail spray didn't help, it only spread the cloudiness around. I had to run a soapy sponge over the hood to get rid of it, although now I've probably taken away some of the protection too. I wonder if I had left it alone, would that cloudiness have eventually disappeared? I seem to recall when I used Liquid Glass back in the late 80s, on my brand new black 88 Dodge Shadow Turbo, that it used to go cloudy like that at first, but they used to say that you had to "bake" the Liquid Glass in the hot sun and that cloudiness would go away (they were right)
