The only thing that I blame the boomers for is protesting Vietnam actions less than they did the executive branch's changes to the US's monetary and free trade policies.
I think you meant to say "more" protesting over the Vietnam war and none over the end of the Fair Trade laws and the going off of the gold standard.
We needed the end to the Fair Trade laws. Our own were screwing us even more with limited goods and totally lousy quality ..especially with cars ..in both engineering and assembly. Competition made US manufacturers (of cars in particular) change for the better.
OTOH, it both created and destroyed our consumer electronics. You had to dedicate a good chunk of coin for an upscale American stereo ..and you still do.
What should have been done is "controlled growth" in trade imbalances, but I think that the genius of the whole thing was stuff like securing agreements that oil be traded in US$$ and that our ag sector get heavily subsidized to make them the backbone of our export support. All nations needed dollars to pay for their petroleum ..and were driven out of business to feed themselves.
Not a bad strategy, but it sure would have been nice to have the evolutions occur at a slower pace. But that would "get in the way" of growth and money making ..and ...well, you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs...
Funny how those who send humans into the meat grinder profess that they do it for "the greater good" ..but they're conspicuously never on the receiving end of the carnage.
