Hey guys,

In my fleet of vehicles I have an '06 Eclipse GT 6spd that I drive in the summer, and store for the winter. Each end of driving season I clean it up, move it into the garage, change the oil, change the manual fluid, fog the engine and put it up on jackstands and over it until it is time to drive again.

Well, it is that time again. "summerized" it on Thursday and it is back on the road.

Now that all the unimportant information is out of the way, here is my dilemma.

I purchased some 5w30 Pennzoil Ultra mainly because I wanted to get it in time to get my free Ferarri hat lol. I run 5w30 syn in the Eclipse 3.8l and the Kia 2.0 so I knew I would use it.

I have about 200 miles on the Castrol Edge that I installed before I stored the car for the winter. I'm anxious to use my new oil. Would it be considered a huge waste to drain the Edge and fill it with the new Ultra? I'm trying to convince myself that the oil in the engine went through all sorts of abuse and climate change during the winter that prob has affected the quality of the oil (lol I know that is not true by any means) but I feel bad dumping $20 worth of basically new oil.

Do I change the oil just so I can use my new oil and dump it? Or I could drain it and save it to either use again or put in the Kia, or just drive it with the Edge in there until it actually needs to be changed??

I know I'm not the only one who has prematurely changed my oil because I wanted to try something new.

Well, you can change the oil... And send me the used edge so I can dispose of it.... :D Seriously lol. If you don't want it, that oil is cherry.

To some it may be a waste but why not do what makes you happy? Remember its really not that expensive and it sounds like you aren't concerned about the cost.

Well, I guess the $20 I spent months ago to be is gone either way, so the money doesn't really matter. I guess it is just the principle?

Some folks would say it is a waste of money, some say it is bad for the environment, some say it is supporting our enemies in the middle east, etc...

do what YOU want

I would just change the oil out and put in your favorite oil for your baby, but on draining the Edge that is perfectly fine, I would use alot of caution and be as clean as possible and drain the oil into a clean container, then filter it through some type of filter to prevent any big stuff that might have made it into the oil and reuse it in one of my daily (don't cherish as much ) cars. I just had a expierience with Edge, I changed from conventional to EDGE and the engine used 1 quart in 2,500 miles dont no why. I will give it a bit to stop but it should not do this.

I have a brand new 5 gallon bucket of the transmission fluid that was free to me when the mitsu dealer I worked at closed. It would take me forever to go through it, so I might as well use it.

NIce!

The Edge will be just fine for the summer driving season.
It would be a shame to drain virtually unused oil.
Save the Ultra for next fall's change.
We all know that the months of summer pass with unseemly haste, while those of winter linger.

i would run the edge just to get moneys worth out of it... i have 11$ qs syn in my g5 with 2400 miles on oil but there is no way i am changing that until at least 6k even though i want to try ultra..hopefully ultra will have a rebate by may

I'm contemplating the exact same thing, too. 5 qts. of Synpower in a stored car, 30 min total run time in 6+ months...about to come out. Bet it ends up in my beater!

Do you have an AAP near? I talked to the manager at mine and he had never even heard of Ultra yet. He said he was definitely going to call his warehouse about getting some in his store. You never know, sometimes AAP offers rebates so maybe there is hope. If you have a store talk to the manager if you don't see it in the oil racks. That's the only way to get the ball rolling.

I've changed my oil early in order to try a different oil many times. The one time that comes to mind is when everybody had to try GC 0w-30. I put it in my truck, drove it for a few days and then I notice my engine was making a loud ticking at idle. Needless to say that oil came out and left a big green stain on my driveway(I spilled it). Pennzoil went back in and the ticking went away. The GC went in my neighbor's waste oil furnace. I wouldn't do that now because I'm picky about which oils go into my engine in the first place.
