So I came into my local Walmart to get my oil changed like I do sometimes. I brought my own oil and filter like I always do and after 45min in the shop they paged me only to tell me they would not change my oil. Reason stated because I wanted them to install a FPS filter instead of the Ultra. I explained the only difference is, it is alittle longer and there is no grip. They still refused. I then mention since the Ultra on there now is rated for 15,000mi they could just leave it on my motor and just change the oil. He said it is against store policy to change oil without changing the filter. So I drove up to Toyota to have them change it. No problem! Used 5w30 QSUD with FPS4386 filter and received a coupon to receive my 4th OC free. Has a similar situation happen to anyone else.

The store may have got in trouble for it before...so that could be the reason. And even if you are sure that it is going to work-they might be trying to get them to ruin your engine...as the techs are not experts on all cars (even some)- can't blame them for not doing it...

It's the fun part of being way more knowledgeable than the people changing your oil...

Just keep going up the chain of management. Ive been forced to install the house 5W30 Quaker State from the pump in a brand new 6.4L Powerstroke because the person went to the store manager.
He thought the diesel oils were rip offs and the same thing as the regular oil.

He was sure it is a scam and there was no telling him otherwise.

A friend worked for Wal Mart after the 2 printing businesses he worked for died. They (Wal-mart) actually provided cheaper health insurance than he could get elsewhere. Anyway, he said Wal mart are really barely breaking even on auto repairs because they often have vehicles leave without oil, wheels unbolted, etc. and Wal Mart eat the cost. So the mechanics are held to strict regulations to avoid high tech problems like leaving the drain plug off. If they can't add oil looking at filters is waaaay too high tech.

That's [censored], I know they don't change the oil filter unless you ask them to. I work in an independent lube shop and a customer of ours got her oil changed and went on a cross country trip, had the oil changed somewhere along the way at a Walmart. Brought the car back in to us when she got home, Walmart service sticker stuck to the window. Went downstairs to get to work on it and it still had our same filter that I installed with my initials and date on it. That's not the only car I've seen that happen with either. You know when you get a Walmart car, either by the cheap Fram Core filters or the blue goop they gob around the drain plug and over-tighten the [censored] out of it.

OP, I'd keep going to the dealership for OC's if you can't do it yourself. I'd stay far away from big chains like Walmart and Jiffy Lube. All you need to land a job in those places is a pulse, most guys that work there know absolutely nothing about cars and are just there for a paycheck. I wouldn't let either place change the oil on my lawnmower! At least at a dealership you know that somebody who's certified is working on your car. And if something goes wrong with the car on their behalf, they typically won't try to run you around the block and get out of it like Walmart or Iffy Lube would.

Reminds me of when I brought in oil to recycle. Keep it in a red gas can that's never been used for gas with "used oil" Sharpied on outside. Employee told me to wait, then manager came out and told me they won't recycle oil in a can labeled gas. I explained it wasn't ever used for gas but was just easier to store. Nope. So I went to my car in their lot and poured it into the empty 5 qt jug I was going to recycle at the garbage recycling center. Walked in, and said I neede to recycle that oil. Guy said, "OK" and took it. LOL Idiots.

Walmart wouldn't change oil?

Dodged a bullet there

If I had a shop, I wouldn't waste my time changing someome's oil if they brought their own oil/filter. If you wanted it done a certain way, slide under there yourself and you will be done in ten minutes.

WM once put in SuperTech after I paid for Mobil 1, and later DOUBLE FILLED my Chevy truck with 12 quarts.

This is exactly why I went out and bought Rhino Ramps and vowed to NEVER AGAIN let WM touch my vehicles. I am done with them.

Think of it as them doing you a favor. Just read some of the horror stories here about shops doing oil changes and you'll see what I mean.

Seriously...the last time I was leaving walmart through automotive, I heard this:

Employee A: "What kind of oil did you put in that vehicle that just left?"

Employee B: "I dont know, I just guessed. It should be fine."

LOL Classic!

The employee did the right thing. If its not listed in his book for your vehicle he should not use it. The employee cannot easily tell if the filter you brought in is actually a better filter that is slightly larger or one you had sitting around in the garage for unknown vehicle and brought in to save a few $$.

He did not have the time to research and determine if the supplied filter is an acceptable alternative yet Walmart would still be liable if the oil change screwed up the engine.

Probably each store manager is a little different. Some store people just like to be difficult as a habit. They should just have a waiver to sign. What do they charge if you bring your own oil and filter?
