Local WM has something called Accel motor oil. Graded 10W40 and listed as SH/SJ, for engines made prior to 1988. The black plastic bottle has a WPP logo. At $1.30/quart, is this stuff any good?

Personally I would not use it in a "newish" vehicle. But in outdoor power equipment that specs SH/SJ oil it would be fine and maybe even preferable to SM oils. I bought a power washer last year with a B&S engine and it specs a SJ oil. I suspect that it does for the greater zinc additive package of those oils for the "old fashioned" design of outdoor power equipment engines.

Like Whimsey says, it would probably be ideal in outdoor equipment that spec. an SH/SJ oil, but that is the only application I'd feel comfortable using the stuff.

If I had a pre-1988 car or truck that spec'd a 40wt oil, I'd probably be running an HDEO 15w40, like Rotella or Delo.

Actually, I was thinking of it more as a potential choice for those antsy folks with older cars, like muscle cars, who have been stressing out over the decline in ZDDP in MS oils and the affect this might have on the life of their high performance solid lifter valve trains. The WPP logo made me think this might be a viable oil option if indeed the WPP stands for Warren Performance which is reputed to make a reasonable quality oil for WW.

Certainly, the HD oils, like Rotella, would seem a logical substitute, too.

Thanks for the feedback.

What if its group I???

I use Accel gear oil. It's pretty low end stuff, but it's fine for a 4x4 that doesn't get driven far. Not sure I'd run it in my daily driver or anything that gets driven at highway speed.

Super low end junk which only meets outdated specification. Why on earth would anyone buy this junk? If you want cheap oil, buy whatever major brand oil Kragen/Shucks/Checker has on coupon sale this week. At least you will be getting a modern formulation which hits the generally much more demanding wear, oxidation, sludge, etc. specifications of an SM level oil. SH/SJ .... no thanks!

SJ was a brand new, top-of-the-line specification just 10 years ago. Plenty of cars on the road can handle SJ. My car is from 1994 and the manual recommends SG. Using SJ in it would be a treat compared to what the factory fill was. I would feel fine using this stuff if I could find it in 5W30 or 10W30.
