So I've been messing with this the past 1-1/2hrs. WU tells me I have 18 important updates to install, but it won't download them (0 kb total, 0% completed). It just sits there, scrolling the green bar left to right.

Previously I had updates set to AUTO, but changed to "let me decide" due to the constant nagging GWX. I'd remove it, then it would re-appear and keep nagging me.

I ran a "FixIt" and it hung, so I canceled it. Then tried another solution, and it hung and had to stop it using TaskManager.

Ran another FixIt (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/troubleshoot-problems-installing-updates#1TC=windows-7) and it reported "problems installing recent updates....not fixed" twice.
Service Reg. is missing or corrupt.....fixed
..reset service reg....completed
Windows update error 0x80070057(2016-03-08-T-09_41_19P)...fixed
..resetting win update data store....completed.
Resetting Win Update data store.....completed.
DataStoreAndWULogFiles.zip....15.84MB (don't know where this is)
Error1...access to path C:\\Win\softwaredistribution is denied.

WTH?

Error Report:
..Root cause: RC-DataStore
..ErrorCode: 0x80070057

Collected File:
..CheckSURLog.cab

Then restarted and attempted to retrieve updates....no joy.

It's Greek to me......please advise!

Thanks in advance

No updates since the end of Dec. 2015.

Why bother? I turned off updates 3 years ago. Its been very stable zero problems. I got tired of always updating updates ready to install time wasting.

Right, because installing updates for an operating system is such a huge time-suck. I hope you don't do any banking on that computer you're having 'zero problems' with.

I am still holding out hope that rshaw125's post was a (bad) joke. Ugh.

That you know of. Oh, well. Ignorance is bliss, right?

How exactly do your expect that you'd be made aware of a problem? Do you think intruders leave a note on your desktop?

From http://www.howtogeek.com/202038/why-you-need-to-install-windows-updates-automatically/:

"You often need to patch security problems as soon as possible to fix whatever the problem is. After a patch is released, the security hole becomes public knowledge if it wasn’t already."

As soon as the patches come out, even casual "script kiddies" can begin scanning internet-connected systems testing for the exploits.

[Tangent]: I will often leave notes on people's desktops when I have some time to kill and am on a public WiFi, like at a hotel. I have a text file that explains how I gained access to their system, what I had access to (I'll add some of their folder and file names to the text file for frightening effect), an assurance that I did not do anything, and lastly instructions on how to close the holes.

Click on Start and type cmd to open a command prompt.
When you see the cmd icon in the list, right click on it and select “Run as administrator”.
On the open Command Prompt window copy and paste the commands (all at once)

net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver
pause

This solved my problem! Win6.1-KB947821-v34-x86.msu. "System Update Readiness Tool for Win 7". 228MB. I started it last night, then went to bed.

This morning, I completed it, restarted, tried dwnld updates again, and it just sat there for about 10min. This time I ignored it, and read news while drinking coffee. About an hour later, I saw a "beaming" icon in the system tray. When opened, it said all important updates had been successfully downloaded and I needed to restart for them to be installed. I did so and no issues!

WTH was that all about??? Found lots of posts on MS's regarding this issue as well. Don't have a clue how the update function became broken.

Thanks to all for chiming in with assistance! Much appreciated!

You have it so completely backwards it's almost funny

your anti-malware won't help you with an os level vulnerability

rshaws water tight logic also can support not wearing a seatbelt.

Why bother? I stopped wearing one 3 years ago; zero problems.

With the exception that he can be fraught with numerous security and privacy issues without ever having known it (whereas you tend to be acutely aware of it when not wearing a seat belt is no longer harmless)!

rshaw125 - None of us have a horse in this race regarding whether or not you do this or that with your own system. Positing that not keeping your OS up to date, however - at least in terms of the security updates that are a' plenty for Windows users - as an acceptable practice in a day and age when so much of our lives is conducted online will draw out some comments to the contrary; if only to serve impressionable others who might be reading these threads.

Most Linux-based OS's with a GUI I have seen over the last several years have even allowed for differing update policies for security and userland (ie. "Download and install security updates immediately" and "Notify me every x weeks for updates"). I don't know if Windows allows separate actions for user programs versus kernel and security updates. One, though, should always always always always always remain abreast of core OS updates!

I recently had an issue similar. My Windows 10 wouldn't update properly. Turns out my Avira Pro antivirus was in-conflict with Windows Defender.

Because my Aviro Pro takes literally 1-1/2 days for a full scan (insane), I was disabling it and running Window Defender virus scans. After a while my internet surfing slowed and I started getting Reset Connection webpages at a few sites I visit everyday.

Then I tried totally disabling Avira (not an uninstall) and only ran Windows Defender for a few days. My web-surfing became so much faster, but the reset connection stuff kept popping up.

I-then disabled Windows Defender in Settings and activated Avira once again. Web surfing slowed a little, but not bad. Only got the reset connection webpage once or twice a day after that.

Then a couple days ago, I activated Windows Defender and kept Avira activated fully.
Now everything is back-to-normal and my computer is functioning perfectly..... no more reset connection displays. Internet surfing is back to being fast.

Weird!..... makes little sense in-how that all played-out. My lesson-learned is not to disable Avira to run Windows Defender virus scans.

I never get viruses anyways, so I will stop the once-a-week scans. In the two years I've had Avira Pro, it has caught (3) bad guys and notified me that they were being blocked. I assume Avira deleted them because they are not showing up in my quarantine file.

Avira Pro does work great. So no more weekly antivirus scans and Windows Defender only lurks as an emergency backup, should I uninstall Avira.

I made a mess of my computer, for over-messing with it. I should have left everything alone as-is.
