I can't think of any reason that wouldn't work (keep in mind, I think a proper-fitted screw driver would still not damage the plug to a degree that would really harm the slot).
That said, I think I'm done pulling the drain plug. I've use an extractor before and still gotten out 6 qts. I use a lighted inspection mirror to do a quick check of the underside. With the oil filter up top, using an extractor just makes sense, particularly if you'd added a bigger skid plate (or you have an Alltrack with the bigger tray stock).
