She commutes about 45 miles a day to and from work so it sees a lot of highway miles. The car is garage kept but does see plenty of cold starts as she parks outside at her workplace. The manual states a 5-30 can be used if 5-40 isn't available. Since I'm not using the 10k intervals, would a 5-30 be ok or do these engines like a heavier 10-30?

There seems to be a prejudice among VW dealers for the heavier oils.

I owned two of the water-cooled 4 cylinders in the '90s and ran them both over 250k on Mobil 1 5w30 with no problems and without having to add oil between changes.

That's what I'd start with, and then if your oil consumption is too great, move to the 0W-40.

I think there's a prejudice among VW owners (older owners perhaps) to use heavier oils. We've used 10W-40 for decades with good results. Now I'm using M1 0W-40 in my Audis.

No doubt it goes back to the air-cooled VWs.

There are few reasons to use an SAE 40 oil if you're using synthetics.

If you've had good luck with the Syntec 5-40...stick with that or try the 5-50. I've used both and the 5-50 is the same formula with extra cojones and will greatly diminish consumption.

Got the oil changed tonight. I went with the Rotella Syn 5-40 and an STP filter. Got the oil for a little under 13 bucks at Walmart. Just for snicks I cut open the Bosch filter I took off and the extra STP I bought. They look to be identical with the exception of 4 more pleats of media in the Bosch. Thanks again for all the replies.
