It's not that much to take care of VWs...the maintenance is easy.

Agree with everything except getting M1 ESP at Walmart. The ones around here have never carried it.

What about owners who don't change their own or the VW dealer is over an hour away like here? What are the chances the oil changer of their choice has the "correct" oil? Remember most owners aren't enthusiasts and think oil is oil.

Too much nonsense for minimal returns.

If Walmart/CT cannot offer a variety of motor oils to choose from, then it's clearly too exotic for my tastes.

Let us not forget Toyota sludge gate with their 3.0 and 2.2 engines back in late 90's early 2000's. Or the subsequent oil burning 1ZZ-FE and 2AZ-FE engines.

And Chrysler had a Mitsubishi designed engine that would clog oil holes and kill bearings unless synthetic was used back when synthetic was exotic stuff. And the first gen GM displacement on demand engines did best with synthetic oil and conservative OCIs.

VW specifying an oil not readily available and expensive relative to the market is going to lead to many of it's vehicles not running the specified oil. Will this lead to problems?

You can order your own oil and take it anywhere to have it changed - that is what I would recommend b/c you are right, most quick lube/independent shops that don't have VW experience will likely not use the correct oil.

Honestly? I vote "no". So much drama about oil and you know what? If you just dump in regular ole' Mobil 1 5W20/30 and change it every 5k like many do it will probably be just fine.....how often do you hear about lubrication-related oil failures? Almost never and the average American probalby uses 1) the wrong oil most of the time and 2) doesn't change it at the recommended interval. It's just somethign to talk about online but it's not as huge a deal as many nerds (I am one!) make this out to be...

You do realize that the 0w20 oil is roughly 40 x thicker at 32*f than at operating temperature, right ?

Based on what you are saying, your car should run poorly anytime the oil is cold. And, the oil takes 20 minutes or more to warm up to operating temperature.

So your car will run poorly MOST of the time, based on what you are speculating about the " thick ... " 5w40 causing problems.

Sorry, but any issues you think are caused by the oil are actually only IN YOUR HEAD. Or, most likely, caused by something else ...

I don't need cold viscosity lessons. And yes most car run a bit "off" when warming up anyhow.

How about KV100 of 7.8 vs 13.6 cSt All I know it ran bad with the incorrect oil, got poor mileage buy about 4 MPG ( not 1 or 2 as you would expect, turbo was noisy like a siren ( and Im deaf at high frequencies), oil temps were up about 10 degF. VW says in a memo that using the 502 or 504 will cause engine issues, and it still hasn't recovered.

I've tried different fuel e.g: Irving. XoM, adding some premium 93. to NO avail.

Could be gas or something "stuck" like junk cam phaser mechanism. or even a crusty intake valve seat or bad injector pattern

Oil or gas - it usually related one of the two

lolwut? This cracks me up. Your car doesn't have the flu, it doesn't need to recover.

lolwut?

With language like that

= IGNORE.

Sorry "dude".

Kid these days ....

Putting a 40 in a 20 is not a good idea. I can see a 20 /30 mixup or swap happening often but causing little issue - other than where a garbage API SM conventional with mucho VM is being run across a whole year in in overworked turbo car.

The VW 508 is A1/B1 low HTHS, low marginal KV, but a good base oil and proper DP and EP to get it through a 20km annual service interval.

I'm sure M1 EP or AP, Castrol Edge EP or Valvoline Advanced would do the job.

I actually used to do this when I didn't DIY on my old MK4 Jetta.

Nope... Can't get it at WalMart. You can allegedly get it at Porsche dealers.

Castrol Professional LL IV FE is right at 7.50 liter at VW dealers, so it isn't really that expensive.

I do agree the probability of an oil related failure is very low. However I would say the chances of them checking the oil and asking for receipts/maintenance records is high if you do have one and it isn't dealer serviced.

As for the original topic, unfortunately dealers getting it wrong on this sort of thing is not surprising.

ah....ok now I see it...I wasn't looking at the correct M1 0W20...the ESP is the one you need and they don't carry it...my bad. Still, the LM kits for $75 can be had from several Euro retailers and can be on your doorstop in a few days. I also agree with you that if you haven't had dealer servicing, they will want to see a record of your changes and that could be a spreadsheet, receipts, etc.
