I have a 2010 fusion 3.0v6 and a 2013 mustang v6 both have variable valve timing. I have no problem using 5w20 have used it in many vehicles specced for it without issue. My fusion seems to burn a bit of edge FST in 5w20 around the 5grand mark. wondering if i can step up a weight to 5w30 and will it affect my vvt in either vehicles? I understand warranty issues with using 5w20.

Nope, your fine to step up. VVT's tend to like thin oil at startup to gain hydraulic oil pressure in the controller/actuator gear fast as possible. The system is comprised of very small galleys and passages so it takes a second or 2 to flow. Because your substituting warm viscosity, its a non issue.

No problem. Ford specs 5w-50 in some of the higher performance Mustangs and those have almost identical VVT systems and most will never see a track or experience VVT failures.

No problem at all. Millions of engines with VVT are running heavier oils every day in every kind of climate with no problems whatsoever and have never seen 20w.
