Volkswagen TDI- I like it

Seem to be lots of MK3 owners on vwvortex. :) It's usually not the drivetrain that fails, but the floorboards that succumb to rust.

Best,

It has been a while but one of the best little cars I've ever owned was my 1982 VW Diesel Rabbit. I had no problem at all getting between 54-57 mpg on the highway with it.

I noticed Audi has an A3 TDI wagon in the U.S. now for about $30k. Can't get it with quattro or manual transmission though.

Yeah, which is a shame, because it doesn't offer anything different than a Jetta Wagon, for example.

MSRP on a base 2010 Jetta TDI is $22.6k. It's available with either a 6sp manual or 6sp dual clutch auto (both are rated at 42mpg on the highway). That might be my next ride if I don't decide to just get an older turbocharged B5 Passat or A4 instead.

VWs are great cars when they work, and terrible cars the rest of the time. They work when they are new, and also when they are under warranty. After that, they stop working well

That hasn't been my experience at all. My Jetta is 14 years old and with the exception of routine maintenance of a car that age, I haven't had any trouble with it. I can say the same for the couple of Audis I've owned.

Best,

Ask the people who actually PURCHASED a W12 Phaeton (or a W8 Passat)...

If you can find anyone & IFF they'll even own (sic) up to it!

Actually, you could even ask the one's who even LEASED one (or the other)!

I have a '97 Jetta that i bought for my daughter, and once i fixed the glitches, most of which were caused by repair shops not plugging back in vacuum hoses and sensors. She drove it a while and now i have it.

The car runs great, gets good gas mileage in town and out on the highway, its truly a nice car.

How many of those did they even sell in the US? Low single digit thousands? And I believe the W8 was discontinued in North America after 2 or perhaps 3 model years. *shrug*

Jetta/Passat/Toureg/Golf/Rabbit have been selling like hotcakes. And if they ever brought the Polo over here, you can bet your fanny that those would do VERY well too.

Best,

The previous generation of (06-08) Golf stupidly called the Rabbit by the Herdon VA, Halfwits...is a great product...the newest generation of the Golf, now once again called err, the Golf is also fantastic ...ALSO MOST IMPORTANTLY FOR USA BUYERS IS THAT ACCORDING TO CONSUMER REPORTS THE GOLF IS AS RELIABLE OR BETTER THAN THE SIMILAR OFFERINGS FROM HONDA, TOYOTA OR MAZDA.....

I wouldn't hesistate to buy a NEW Golf gasoline or diesel....

Regarding build site location.....this WAS once a big problem back in the early to middle 90's VW was building the Golf and Jetta in Mexico and the quality was very poor compared to the German built cars...it was so bad that VWoA had to take every unit and put it through extensive quailty audit which resluted in quite a number of cars being extensively rebuilt....around the same time there was extensive labor unrest in Mexico as well so you can figure it out.

Today the Puebla MX plant builds a VW product that is equal to the German one due to better management, plant modernization and automation.

I would like a VW diesel, but the by the time you pay a price premium for both the car and fuel, for my kind of driving it wouldnt ever pay, now from a this is cool factor, well heck thats another story!

Man, which of you has acutally owned a previous gen TDI? Just curious. Lots of good reviews and that is just not the case, not even over at the TDI site. I try not to bad mouth any manufacture, but my TDI ruined VW at least for me.

How can they judge reliability when the Golf has only been out for a year or so? Not that I'd trust CR on anything that has to do with cars...

They are actually judging the MK5 version called the Rabbit, however because the Mk6 is more so an evolution (based heavily on the MK5) than a from scratch model they are giving it the tentitive thumbs up.

Yeah, but that's a big assumption. The whole reason why MK6 came out so quickly after MK5 was because it turned out MK5 was just too expensive to produce. So, as they made it cheaper, god only knows how this will affect reliability in the long run. Let's hope VW only cut the right corners...

The Polo is due to be introduced here later this year. Perhaps as soon as this summer!
