Vise Advice

Good US made vices are very $$$$, and Im not sure if many are made here anymore. Not sure how you could really ruin an old one, considering what they are, so Id look in the secondary market.

I bought a $60 one from a "discount" (aka,Chinese) tool store that went out well over a decade ago,and it still works great.I guess even the Chinese dont make stuff like they USED TO anymore...

Agreed. High quality older vises are plentiful and very inexpensive.

Well, $1K+ is way North of my price point... I think allocating $100 for a local find is probably what I'll have to resort to. Unfortunately the time neeeded to scavenge hunt is not something I can readily come across.

But a man has to do what must be done...

How about this:

Of course, they make ones a little more cost friendly too...

What size do you want?

I've had several smaller ones in the 3-1/2" to 4-1/2" range. They've been fine for most of what I want to do, but I sometimes wish I had something a little larger.

Often price will increase a lot when you get above the sizes I mentioned.

All the ones I've owned are older USA made models, which can be good, but it can be hard sometimes to find ones that haven't been abused and still have useable jaws.

If you decide going Chinese would be OK, then several members on Garage Journal have this vise:

Even some of the brand-name vises are now imported. Wilton even has imported vises now. The catalog on their website indicates which ones are still USA made.

There are lots of threads on the topic of vises over on Garage Journal.

Believe me I understand that, and I also understand a vise weight quite a bit more. But the fact remains their is a HUGE difference in price, I say HUGE. And with all the years of making cast iron products, 60,000 psi high grade cast iron is not exactly an unknown science.

I still contend its our good old EPA.

Sounds like vises are a very limited production run item.

I can imagine that the 'Good old vices' were made too good!
They are still around, and in use.

Plus, our younger generation don't feel the need to own a vice.

= Low demand = Low production = High price

I think you pretty much nailed it.
