My McAfee virus protection just expired, and I don't want to pay another $40 for another year. Does any body know where I can get a good "well O.K" free virus protection. What virus protection is good for the price? $$

I agree. Loaded MSE onto my new HP core i5 desktop a few months and it is working seemlessly.

The best virus protection around is OS X or Linux when paired with vigilant & attentive users.

If you insist on using Windows, Microsoft Security Essentials seems to be OK, and the price is right.

I agree that the best protection is a viligant and careful user. If you watch what you click on and avoid attachments in e mails you are already ahead of the game.

Another option would be to check with your ISP, most major ISPs offer free AV to their customers. Usually it's Norton or McAfee, but occasionally it'll be something else

I have been very happy with Avira Antivir. I also use Malwarebytes and Superantispyware.

Nothing named McAfee will ever be on a computer of mine ever again.

Highly recommend Microsoft Security Essentials.

I find that it works well and I use the Windows built in firewall.

One change in the settings I would make is changing the update time to one where you may have the computer on.

I have Cox for my ISP and they have their suite which includes Mcafee. I kept on getting viruses into my system and they were of no help. After 2 reformatting, I went back to AVG free and haven't had a problem. I also run Malware.

I like Avira, it worked best for me (of the free ones). But through one of our vendor reps I got a year of Trend micro Maximum security- that thing is great, I love it! If you can stomach the $80 price tag (for 3 computers).

I use no antivirus, haven't for years now.I'm loving it and will never go back!

No constant updates, no interminable tweaking of rules, no checking out the latest AV comparitive and worrying whether my solution has best on demand/best real-time/is lightest or just isn't the latest fad. No ropey releases and [censored] support. No on-going cost!

Good luck but there are easier routes these days to choose from.

+1. I have not had a virus in 5-6 years at least. Then that one popped up after my brother used the machine. Did the sandboxie for a bit, it annoyed the [censored] out of me; got rid of it. If I have a 'questionable' link I mouse over to my linux lappy and open it on there. But thats rare.
