Valvoline Restore & Protect cons?

My unscientific report on R&P is it seems to have had a good effect on a '15 Kia Soul 2.0L.
Currently on the third R&P oil change. Runs peppy now.

There's a thicker grade for my purposes. My neighbors 03 Honda CR-V has been having Maxlife Blend 5w20 go through it like 💩 through a goose. I suspect it's burning oil, but I still haven't conclusively diagnosed it. I'm going to put VRP 5w30 in it. For her CR-V 5w30 is a higher grade.

However, I understand what you mean. There's no VRP grade higher than 5w30 in USA.

That will be interesting. Keep us posted, please.
Don't tell me they were running Maxlife synth blend at 5K miles OCI.
I was running my '98 Civic on Maxlife 5w30 for about 10 years and there was a lot of varnish on the valve train when were replacing the timing belt. However, I think it was a good oil for that time and for my needs. I was dumping it every 3-4K miles OCI. I regret that I wasn't running the Civic on full synth from the very beginning as the guy I sold it to.

I don't know what brand/version of 5w20 oil what used in the 03 CR-V in the past. It would have been whatever a local quick lube place put in. My cousin recently put 5w20 Maxlife Blend in it. I wish I'd have had him put in 5w30 Maxlife, or ideally 5w30 Valvoline Restore and Protect, but hindsight is 20/20.

Goodness and here I thought hindsight was 0W/20.

I believe GM Dexos 1 Gen 3 approval has tighter standards for sludge, volatility and LSPI than GF-7. So, lack of approval for this standard, or even a claim to meet it, means the oil could potentially perform worse in those categories.
I guess application plays a roll also. Not everyone is driving around DI engines.

So there could always be cons we don't see until later

I made a thread in this a few weeks ago, this oil helped almost completely stop oil burn i had in a 2021 hyundai kona 2.0 awd.

A lot of people here scoff at new trends, just because you don't understand it doesn't mean it's not valid.

Some car guys live like it's still 1980's

The best you can do is try for yourself, and keep others opinions on the back burner.

On a more serious note. Why would anyone wanting to clean their engine buy an unproven product when VRP is already proven?
After Valvoline create the market, others will want a share.

And customers are fickle. Reasons to go with the latest new thing-

No brand loyalty
Lower price (on sale, coupons, rebates etc. )
Offering a grade Valvoline doesn’t (10W-40 perhaps)
Marketing weasel-words - “Switch to Mobi-Strol Uno and your car will perform as well as it ever did. 4 oil changes and never use as much* Viagra again!”

* Viagra use has nothing to do with your car engine. Terms and conditions apply. Your mileage may vary. Talk to your doctor before changing engine oil.

According to Valvoline, Restore and Protect is approved and licensed, protecting GDI engines from LSPI. As for sludge, I don't think that would be a problem since the oil is able to clean. Lastly, Noack is under 15%, which can be anything lower than 15%.

Unless you have a MB , BMW , VW , etc. requiring a 3.5 cP oil or you are not driving a Corvette or similar doing a lot of spirited driving - then VRP’s 3.2 cP rating should be close / good enough .

VRP is the highest performing oil in their line. They told me it would absolutely meet/exceed dexos. It's not a performance issue but licensing.

Thanks.
Are all these 5w30 resource conserving oils like the VRP?
https://engineoil.api.org/Directory...csResults?accountId=-1&companyName=Amsoil

By the definition of API:

The low SAPS Euro %W-30 oil is not API listed. But oddly and truly the most resource conserving.
