Is there any reason why you guys prefer valvoline max life Hm say over castrol Hm? I see max life is more popular reading through here. I just put it in my 93 gmc safari with 267000km on it. also got lucky and picked up 15 one litre bottles $3.00 each...Canadian that is at wallmart.

There are usually better deals on ML versus Castrol HM. ML is also semi-synthetic whereas Castrol is not. Castrol may also be a bit thicker.

I don't use HM oil but this is what I remember off the top of my head.

Is that MaxLife Syn or Blend ? $3 a bottle for Syn would be a real buy.. but...on the Blend, so,so.

Valvoline has always had great oil in both conventional and synthetics.

IM assuming so. I always thought high mileage oils were semi- synthetic anyway. Now ive learned some thing new castrol high mileage is not semi sythetic.

MaxLife is available as both a blend and a full syn. But in some areas its very hard to find the full syn version of it.

From what I've seen on here, people tend to like MaxLife b/c it's a robust oil that puts up good UOAs, it's help slow or stop some people's oil usage, and it seems to go strong even in high mileage OCI.

Check out the UOA section to get a better idea of both

YEah you right about that full synthetic max life ,when it first came out I bought 2/ 4.5 litre jugs at walmart. IT looks more grey on the sticker on the front of the bottle and it says full synthetic. Funny thing is about 6 months ago they and canadian tire were clearing them all out as fast as they introduced them to the public. wallys was clearing them out for $15.00/4.5 litre jug, they had a shelf full. stupid me I already had a stash of lots of stuff...now im kicking myself!!!

well up here in canada the syn blend runs for about 5.95/litre so if i see a clearence for 3.00 litre im jumpin on it! went to several wallys and they re all gone, but got lucky at another and filled up my basket.Since my tercel only takes 3 litres and i,ll run that for 6 months cant go wrong, work pays for the van oil change so i got max life for some time to come.

UOA, is a Used Oil Analysis. When changing the oil some people will take a sample of it and send it to a lab, the lab will analyze it and break down what was found in the oil along with some of the oil characteristics. Look on the BobIsTheOilGuy home page, it should have some info about them. Then go to the Used Oil Analysis forum section and just start looking through there, you'll quickly start to understand what's good and what isn't

I know oils have changed a bunch in the last 30 years, but, I never was a fan of any Penn grade oil. As a mechanic (now to old) most engines I took apart that used penn grade were always gunked up pretty bad. Having said that, I know oils have changed drastically but I always used Castrol back in the day and other customers that used it were gunk free (valve cover jobs mostly)but I really like Mobile 1 even though the UOA showed a few high PPB items. Of course some of that could be environmental or a number of other things. BITOG Rocks.

ok camaro10,i got a low mileage mint chevette as a winter beater what if i was to put in the hm max life in there. its a 1.6 takes 4 litres. would the new oil additives in today oil hurt the seals on the car? im using castrol gtx now with no leaks but would a semi syn hurt it in anyway?

Its worked for some of us. It stopped some leaking and consumption in some of my cars.
