My Vic needs 2 tires...the rears are maybe 2/3 worn, but are badly checked and cracked. Current rubber is GY Eagle Ultra Grip, which seems to be a very-pricey bit of near-unobtanium locally. Anyone else make a V-rated snow in a 235/55R17?

Why you need V tire?
Bridgestone Blizzak WS80 is available in that size, H rated and better then GY UG.

Performance winter tires are best where it gets cold but not too much snow.
And winter tires should always be installed in sets of four anyway, especially if you're going to use a different tire.
Exactly!
V and even H rated winter tires are primarily developed for European HWY's and European cars due to the high average speeds on EU HWY's.
That is not the case in the U.S. due to the very strict speed limits and lot of rural areas whose roads are not cleaned like in Europe which is much more congested and easier to clean.
Blizzak LM-22, cooper weather master, Nexen winguard, Yoko winter drive, Pirelli Scorpion Winter, Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip GW3, Pirelli Winter 240 Sottozero, Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3. These are all v-rated in your size.

And not as good performers as Blizzak's WS80 or other hardcore winter tires, especially for RWD car.
I've run lots of lower rated tires on my cars. Was very happy with the Hankook iPike W409 as well as the Michelin xIce.
Running the Michelin Pilot Aplin this year on the 'stang, but we aren't having much of a winter to speak of, so I don't feel like I can offer comments on winter traction. Great driving tire, though.
The one place is it is kinda ok to run 2 winter tires is the rear of a rwd car. It wont steer or brake.. but it wont spin out either.
Its usually cheaper to run 4 than to plow into something but personal preference eh?
No need for V rated tires. If you want to run v rated tires there are many "performance winter" tires that are V-Rated. They wont perform in deep snow or ice as well.. but the dry and wet traction could be better (depending on actual tire purchased)
Also mixing speed ratings is the least of your worries.
Why not replace all 4? I would put same rubber all around. With a RWD..I'd get studded if it were my DD. Depends what kind of weather you see. I have Nokian R2's that have been very good so far. Although not the best on ice..my next set might be studded.

V-rated winter tires are expensive. Two of them may be close to the cost of 4 r-rated ones.

So what is your plan? To run snow tires year round on the back?
Most people get an extra set of wheels for the snow tires.

WRG3 comes in v rating as well.
So does Dunlop Winterrsport 4D, but what is the point? It is RWD scar, on top of everything Crown Vic. I simply do not understand.
For two Dunlop's or Nokian's he could get 4 Blizzaks or if not them then Cooper or something like that.

*facepalm*
No, my plan is to run winter tires in the winter, and switch to summer tires (car came with 4 Eagle RS-As) in the summer!
