Using 0W 40 Mobil 1 in 0W 20 or 5w30 vehicles?

I have several quarts of Mobil 1 , 0-40 oil for a VW I recently sold. I have two Honda CRV's which call for 5W30, and two Nissans calling for 0W20. Can I use the 0W 40 in either, or mix other weights of oil to approximate them?

If I were you I'd just exchange them at Walmart, they let you return for store credit up to a certain amount per year, then use it for another weight.

I would mix the 0w40 with M1 0w20 to make a great 0w30 (Caterham blend) and use it in the 2 Hondas.

my thoughts are to mix 0-40 and 0-20 in equal proportions to arrive at a 0-30 that you can use in your honda, provided that the honda is not under warranty and requiring something specific.

+1

A crv with a k24 2.4 liter engine would love that oil, though I might wait until spring. An older B20 2.0 liter would love it. I don't pay much attention to Nissans, sorry.

Wouldn't "hurt" in any of them.
"0W" has the cold end covered.

They will have the same kinematic viscosity at 90C, 100C, and 110C for the 0W20, 5W30, and 0W40 respectively.

If there's less than a sump's worth, just use them all in the Honda and top off with 0W20 or 30 M1...

Why don't you just do this:

?

Yes, use the M1 0w-40 in the Honda and top off whatever it needs to get capacity with 0w-20 or 0w-30.

However, conversely you may want to add them together at the refill. 2 quarts 0w-40 to 2 quarts 0w-20. No problems.

I would just use it and not worry.

Iv used 20w50 in a car that called for 5w20 (due to severe oil leak).

Engine didn't fail, CIA hasn't wire tapped me, NSA isn't monitering me, and as I have seen any FBI party vans around...

Think I might have gotten away with it.

(I'm joking BTW) I know some people take it very seriously and if you want to then simply mix them.

As long as the Honda are not under warranty, you can use the 0w40 without any issue. I mix a 5w20 (60%) and a 10w40 (40%) for my old Subaru to get a light "5w30-like" blend. Nothing wrong with mixing although a 0w40 is likely not going to harm (but not really help) the Hondas... but I would not touch the Nissan.

The thin oil police will be knocking on your door soon.
You are now warned...

My 2012 Equinox 2.4 liked it when it was warmer. The VVT doesn't like it when temps are below 30° at night. Start up noise is bad, and engine hunts for a stable RPM. I guess the VVT doesn't like the thicker oil. Switched back to Mobil1 5W30, no noise, engine idle is smooth as it idles down.

I'd use what you have in the Hondas. Stick to 0w20 in the Nissan. Then switch the Hondas to 0w20 when the 0w40 is gone. Buy one oil for all your vehicles.

Use this oil in the Hondas during the warmer months.
This is among the recommended grades for this engine in other markets and probably is for the Nissans as well.
No harm, no foul.

Thanks for all the helpful advise. I will use 0W40 and top with 0W20 on the 2001 honda CRV and the 2010 Honda CRV. Thanks to everyone who posted.
