Hello and yesterday was a decent day at my work. Around 2:25p.m. when the one useless pm guy(20 something nerd that doesnt know very much about cars to begin with) decided he was going to try to chew me out about a car. This useless kid works Friday-Tuesday 2:30p.m. to 11:00p.m. All he does is oil changes, new vehicle inspections and not very much else. He will gladly do the inspections that are in the fleet and the pm's(oil changes) but when those run out he hides or doesnt do anything for the rest of his shift. He sometimes orders tires for a car that needs them for pa inspection, high mile cars that the company re titles to pa, etc. He looked at 2 cars that were cars that needed front brakes and front tires. My boss always stressed to him and all of us that you need to start a R.O. (repair order for the work we do, as its on computer these days). He orders the parts, tires, then since he ran out of work tuesday night, he NEGLECTS to put the brakes or tires on either one of the cars. My boss told me to put his name on the window, and to also write, "so and so, start a r.o.". When the kid sees this, he asks me who did it, I tell him I did it as my boss said to do it. He flips out on me and one other guy saying that what I did was "mean and disrespectful". He goes on complaining and whining saying he was sick and had a bunch of other things to do. I punched out of work as it was 2:30p.m. already, called my boss and told him about this "rant". My boss called me this morning and told me he chewed the kid out and is writing him up monday.

I hope my boss does the right thing and fires this lazy worker on monday for all of my fellow employees sake, as he just makes our job of doing "his work" much harder.

Sorry for the long topic

Sorry that you have a useless person there, but I thought that a non union business never had any like that since they get rid of them and the union workers were the only useless employees. It is amazing that businesses keep useless people around even when they can get rid of them. In Kansas at least you are a at will employee and they can fire you anytime.

Well my company voted yesterday on union or no union, and PA unfortunately is not a "right to work state". The kid just orders stuff and doesnt "hang the parts/tires" as we in the fleet say. I think he flipped out cause' I was a man enough to stand up to him and tell him off and tell him the way it is at work.

If the boss tells you to do it, I don't see a problem here.

I'd much rather cover my butt with the boss. A runny-nosed little punk like this shouldn't even appear on your list of things to worry about.

Tell Junior that you've got better things to do than to stand around and discuss what is HIS responsibility around the workplace.

If he needs help in understanding what he was hired to do, tell him to take his whining directly to the boss. It'll probably help him to get canned even faster.

I wish I could kick his butt, but he claims he doesnt fight as he's a "christian". Funny thing, I didnt know christians were allowed or supposed to swear at people. He claims he can do the work, but each day the vehicle sits it costs the company money, and I think the kid is afraid to get dirty and do the work on the cars he started working on and ordering parts for. My boss has told him already about not starting a repair order and not doing that part of his job, and about making more work for us mechanics. The kid told me and my boss that he has been "so busy" lately, I told the kid flat out to his face he is a lying p.o.s.

Shouldn't the boss be able to figure out that the kid is costing him business/money? It should be pretty simple to look at when he started on the vehicle, what work was needed to be done and when it got done. Seems like the boss needs to take a course on how to be authority and not a nice guy sometimes.

It sucks working with idiots, but just ignoring him is the best course of action, most likely.

Staying on good terms with your boss is what matters.

@silver Civic:

I've been in the work world employed mostly at small businesses for decades now. What you speak of sounds like this "punk" is a relation of either your boss, his boss, or someone that actually owns the company itself.

If he wasn't somebody to someone he would have likely already been fired by now.

Best thing to do is ignore the idiot, don't get involved...But I can understand how annoying it is to watch a lazy bum get paid, possibly as much as you do, for doing little or nothing.

If you're feeling brave go to the princple owner and politely speak with him explaining what is occuring , make sure to mention that you are sure that he would want to know about employees like this since they are a drain on his balance sheet.

Maybe you'll get the pleasure of seeing this "punk" mumbling to himself as he walks to the door after the owner fires him.

I own a construction company 22-30 men. I have found that most(stress most) under 25s are useless, lazy and all in all a waste of effort to have around.

Please don't stereotype and assume everyone under the age of 30 is lazy and has no work ethic. I am approaching 27 and am far from that.

I'm 35 and would love to get into doing PMs and tires. (And so much more). If that kid hit the highway there'd be 50 applications for his position.

Or a nerd.

This kid sounds like a slacker, but definitely not a nerd.

This kid is definitely useless. My boss called me today and told me he stopped in to work, as he was going to the PITT/Cincinnatti game tonight. He wrote the moron up and also told him what he did really was insubordination and not to ever do it again. My boss told him to do something and he passed the buck, plain and simple. The kid actually was a manager at MIDAS, and I hear wasnt very bright there either. He also is the BIGGEST but kisser I have ever seen. I told my boss if he keeps this [censored] up, I will tell our city manager and region manager and would love to see him get canned.

dparm...until you told us your age, I would have guessed that you were much older...

But that's based on the displayed maturity in your posts...until now, your chronology was unknown to me...and often, that's irrelevant...it's attitude and perspective that matter...

And this toad has none...sigh...

Dparm. That is why I posted "most" in my comment. You are absolutely right. Not all men under 30 are useless however in my business we weed out the slackers real quick. I would say 10% of new guys under 30 are worthwhile keeping. I started a thread on this exact topic last week in my Harley forum and I am not alone in my observations that today's youth are spoiled and coddled.
That being said I have a couple of really good young guys who will succeed in this business. But it is not the norm. I am 35 and when I was coming up it seemed everyone I knew had drive and ambition, now it's video games and online porn.
Not all of today's youth are useless however the future looks bleak. Jmo
