No, it's not a theory. I've tested used oil filter (9k) and they were still not saturated.

Here's how you can prove your own theory. Take your current OCI ..change the filter. Next time just do half the mileage that you did before and keep the same filter.

See how easy that was? You've just reused a filter at twice the service length you did your oil. Easy as pie.

Now figure that you're like most and way over conservative with your oil ..dumping it way too often, and you might be able to see that you're already dumping it in half the time ..and replacing the filter too.


Filters mainly load with the warm up process. The rest of the mileage hardly counts. More miles per event, more (mostly) hollow miles. Doing 15k a year with 7500 mile oil? Doing 15k with 15k oil? Wouldn't the same filter work for both ..or are you suggesting that you would do a mid span filter change?

I have re-used in the past for a total interval of 9,400 miles.

I have been changing since at 4,700 miles (the oil AND filter).

Will probably go back to oil and filter every 9,400 miles but only oil change at the midpoint (4,700 miles).

Makes sense to use something that is still doing its job, my motor is spotless and live in a warm climate so it's all good.

My oil is honey-amber after 5000 miles. I could probably go the full 10,000 no worries (and toyota actually recommends on cheap synthetic blend 10w30 for me)

Less consumption of goods is OK, as long as the tool still works.

We are way too AR about oil...

In about 7K miles I will have a full 20K miles on a Purolator L-24458 Premium Plus oil filter off my 2007 Civic EX and I will cut it open and post some pictures. The first 10K miles were Mobil 1 then I do two 5K OCI with any brand dino.

I doesn't hurt if you reuse an oil filter. I hate when I see people cutting open PureOne or MObil 1 filters with only 5K miles.

Gary Allan, in my opinion this (what your saying in your last post) would come down to the quality of the filter, ie..i dont think comparing your amsoil filter to lets say even a wix would quite be comparing apples to apples. and cutting open a handful of filters and seeing for your own eyes that theyre "clean", is still not proof in my mind that reuse is a good idea, what about the filter you may get your hands on that isnt "glued" properly or has other issues, wouldnt you rather think you put 5-7K on that filter than to leave it on for lets say 12k plus? I have a mazda in wich i get to see it (cartridge) every time i change my oil without cutting it. There are ppl using lets say M1ep and buying a fram to go along with it, so is this a good idea for them?

based on testimony that its a good idea to reuse an oil filter....let me ask this..since we all know a filters job is to filter, and some cut there filter open to "be sure based on what their eyes can see", why not take it a step further, the filters doing its job, so the oil must be clean, why not simply replace the filter every so many miles and "top off" our oil?

That is possible is certain situations; usually with bypass filtration and heavy duty oil. There is a UOA is the Diesel subfourm of a Duramax with 27k just changing filters and topping up with regular Delvac 15W40.
It certainly wont work for all situations, its just one of many possible ways to go about keeping the oil in satisfactory condition.

I have no idea.. In all likelihood it doesn't matter much either way. If Honda says change filter every other OC, then I don't think it matters much.

There are 500,000,000 filters used every year in the US alone. If everyone used a filter twice, then 250,000,000 would not go to landfill in one year alone

How would a Brita water filter have impact on oil filters in landfills?

My question is....what about when you remove drain and then go to re install the filter...how often would it be that the sealing o ring on the filter is compromised in some way...as you have to figure that the industry believes that screw on filters are never used twice today? I'd be a bit worried about the o ring failing if not immediately somewhere down the road. Am I off the mark on this?

excellent point vizzy, the way i see it is..its just another form of penny pinching, unfortunatly taken to a whole new (potentially extremely expensive) level

No worries here. Those O-rings are made of thick oil-proof rubber. They will not leak, drip, rupture or sag at the knees

A good filyer has the gasket "crimped" in place: no way it can come off.
