It must have been a LONG, long, long time since you've toured a coal burning power plant.

The way the coal is burned now is more similar to an oil burning furnace - - the coal is ground into fine dust (like flour) and "injected" with a jet of air.

Since the ash exits the flue (to a bagging house), there's actually nothing on the "floor" of the firebox chamber.

The original diesel engine ran on injected coal dust (until it blew up), funny it took over a hundred years for the technology to come full circle.

Pulverised fuel has been around for 100 years this year.

Can't mix the RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel) with the coal, as all of the emissions controls for the whole plant have to be upgraded for mercury and dioxins to suit the small part that is burned refuse.

People I work for are looking at it...will be a stand alone boiler and scrubbers, feeding steam into the main plant, both other than that be separate for licencing and compliance.

Here's how the fuel is sorted..

They will again...problem with lignite (Oz has a version of brown coal) is 60% moisture, but very low ash (needs to cook in the ground a few more million years).

CSIRO have developed the direct injection carbon engine, that runs on a lignite slurry (or black coal if it can be de-ashed).

So instead of 30% efficient in a brown coal station that wastes heaps of energy drying the fuel, they can get marine diesel efficiencies.

I actually like the idea of cathedral diesels capable of starting and stopping as and when market needs, and the wind doesn't blow.
