Sounds like Hylomar.
It's been around for a LONG time. I haven't had great results with it, and thus haven't used it in years.
I use silicone RTV for most sealing needs. Get the good stuff. Clean the surfaces, and let it cure.

All sorts of gaskets like intakes , water pumps, etc..
It said it was also a gasket substitute, and that's when it was at it's worst. Like a differential cover with no gasket.
I am uncomfortable with using it.

I use them for different applications. I use Ultra black, blue, or copper usually instead of gaskets for water pumps, diff. covers, thermostat housings etc. I use Hylomar on drain plugs and other threaded assemblies, or as a sealer with a gasket. On threaded assemblies it prevents weeping, lubes the threads, and because of it's thick body, if something comes loose, it won't vibrate out. I also use the permatex instead of locktite on assemblies I have to remove occasionally, it just boogers up the threads enough so that a fastener cannot vibrate off.
