From the two VOA's that have been posted, this oil looks VERY good.

Ultra's initial Tbn is higher than Mobil 1, Amsoil and Edge. Only the SSO has a 13 Tbn. Being the oil is retailing for $6.97qt, Exceeds SN, HTO-06, GM 4718M and claims superior Seq IVA performance, this may be the best oil you can buy right now, all things considered.

Tbn 13

With a TBN that high, does anyone think they might try to set it up to be the M1 EP of the Pennzoil line? From what I've seen of the packages it doesn't appear to say anything about extended OCI, but that TBN is wicked high and was consistent on both VOAs. It'll be interesting to see some UOAs to see how it holds up

Shell may not publicly recommend extended drains, but the oil is clearly capable.

For a comparison:

Mobil 1 EP TBN - 10.5
Edge - 10
Amsoil - 12/13 sso
Regular M1 - 8.5
Synpower - 8.5

Keep in mind, initial Tbn isn't everything, but if Platinum is any indication, retention should be very good with Ultra.

Starting TBN means little- its all about retention.I dont see all the hype in another group 3 "synthetic" oil choice....the shelves are crowded with them already- must be the marketing that gets everyone thinking the newest darling is some magic potion.

I haven't been this excited about an oil since I first heard about GC and started hunting through every Walmart in a twenty mile radius of my house! :)

I definitely am going to switch the Corvette over to Ultra, but I've still got two oil changes worth of PP in my stash. I might just do one more interval with PP and then use the leftover in my wife's car (once I use up the leftover Schaeffer Supreme I'm running in it now)

I wonder how long it will take before this oil starts showing up in Canada though? If it doesn't show up in a timely fashion I can always take a road trip to Niagara Falls, NY to pick some up, as it's only a 90 minute drive (although the border crossing can sometimes take an hour or two!)

Additives are obviously a very critical component of motor oil. It could also have esters and/or alkylated napthalenes in addition to the PAO and Group III that is does have according to the MSDSs.

but his point is valid, without good tbn retention, all the esters and pao in the world won't do THAT much, especially if extended intervals are considered.

For me, I need to see the right specs met, not just high tbn. Will we see 5w-40 or an A3 rated variant, at minimum?

I agree that TBN retention is important. Since PP has good retention I expect PU to be at least as good in terms of the slope of the TBN curve. It starts with higher TBN though.

That is my thinking. Tbn retention is important, but so is initial Tbn. Initial Tbn is somewhat important.

API SN and GF-5 or the right specs for the North American market. You want European specs, buy European oil. Although I would not doubt if this oil would out perform some of them.

You cant, its something that has to be determined after being used. Your looking for where the TBN drops to from the new number for however many miles. If its 13 but drops fast, then it may have the same life as a 10 that drops slower. For example.

Like I said before I'll wait until REAL world results comes in. Until then I'll leave my self open. I don't believe everything that's being said but everyone is human we like to exaggerate because it makes us feel better.

It might be a good formulation considering the price BUT if it pushes things all the better, forces the other to trump or equate things. Get real oil is getting better and competition is creating a more open field. BUT that is ok things get better and better the consumers win.
