. In my humble opinion the Flag as half staff is reserved for American events. Just more "World Community" Political Correctness BS. Frankly I have had about enough of all of this gargage.
Yes I have sympathy and utter sadness for these poor people. But that is not the point.

Title 4 sec 7 of the US Code and/or the discretion of the POTUS trumps your humble opinion, trumps mine too.

Recipricosity is nice too, it was rather moving to see a sea of blood red Turkish flags at 1/2 mast for a week after Kennedy was assasinated. The Turks are even more nationalistic than Americans are.

Hate to break it to ya Al, but Americans also died.

Of course the ONLY reason he did it was because Bush got so much bad press. Nothing like waiting a couple days before you do soemthing.

You didn't expect more from him, did you?

I think it's fine to lower the flag when so many people from a variety of nations perished. Normally I would be against it, but these circumstances are truly extreme and warrant our respect. As a good and decent nation, the lowering of the flag is a proper and needed action. May God help all those poor people that lost loved ones....I can only imagine the pain.

I don't see the swipe at Bush either. Sheesh.

Relax.

I concur. I like to see the list of what every other country pledged. Better yet, I'd like to see what they actually produce. Visions of the "Iraq food for oil" scandal.

Everybody needs to not lose focus of the terrible tragedy here. Politics aren't part of this picture unless you're cold hearted. My God, over one hundred and twenty THOUSAND people are dead! Forget politics and a silly issue about what position our flag is flown on a stupid pole. Persepective people, PERSPECTIVE!!

Al,
I wouldn't view it as political correctnes, just a nice thing to do, showing support for the people who are suffering.

(Even turkey had their flags at half mast in memory of 9-11)

Only talking on behalf of Oz.
Government initially pledged $10M (Oz)...a paltry 50c per aussie citizen.
Then they uipped it to $35M, $1.75 per citizen.

When it looked like public donations were going to exceed the Govt contribution, it was increased to $60M.

Yesterday, public donations reached $50M, and look like hitting $100M by the end of the month.

We're running 10 hercules aircraft (9 of ours, 1 NZ) delivering supplies, and a few navy vessels.

Private shipping companies are offering free shipping for supplies, and aussie airlines have provided free flights to people affected.

Oz and the US and maybe a few other countries that are capable of moving lots of "stuff" to undesirable places with their military are contributing important logistics support that I don't believe it being tallied up in dollars.

We should give a welcome to the club to India. They have turned down international aid saying they are handling it theirselves. They are also providing assistance to some other countries. A nice step for a country that isn't exactly overflowing with wealth.
