Yes, your fear is overblown. No pun intended.
Any CTEK and you can literally leave it plugged in for that long. Literally.
CTEK 3300
CTEK 7800
CTEK MUS4.3

I like your pun, it gave me a chuckle and you are right the explosion fear is very much overblown...I noticed that most of the high end vehicle owners seem to tout the CTEK brand and that CTEK has direct connections with those manufacturers. I am not their biggest fan as they repeatedly come up lacking in our shop tests, but understand they have a strong following. Was wondering what your experience is and if you have every tried a Genius or PulseTech charger? Our testing seems to elevate both these brands when put head-to-head with CTEK.

I used the CTEK 3300 to top off an already full, already new, already hooked up to a great charging system Advance Auto GOLD battery and left it on overnight a few times.
Even when that car was ENCASED in snow, and I spun the tire to death.. it started up every, single, time, without hesitation. I love the battery, and the charger. Nothing but AAP Silver or Gold for me, unless the battery is another Johnson Controls.....

I have never tried the other tow, just ran to CTEK like everyone else. primarily for the manufacturer-branded chargers and reasons you say! "If it does that it must be good." They also seem to have figured out how to "pulse-charge" the most current into a battery.

Our little Solstice has been garaged on a Harbor Freight float charger continuously since the middle of last summer. It may be on it for years before it gets driven again.

The '04 Jaguar often spends months on a Harbor Freight float charger. I just disconnect the battery on the '94 Jaguar.

I wouldn't worry about it.
