Just wondering how the T.P. is working in the Trascos? Any tips on brand or info on how to install it would be great. My filter media is at 9200 miles and the oil has started to darken from its usual honey color.I would like to get 2000 more miles on this OCI without installing the expesive factory media for the short time,Chris.

Mine seems to be staying the same color it was when I installed it. It isn't the clear amber that most claim, but a dark amber. It was that way after 1k miles with the stock Trasko TP and is that way with the Scotts TP. My engine must run the oil a little hotter, its a 200hp 3.0 DOHC Duratec Ford. So far I havent seen any differences after 2k miles. I used the individually wrapped Scotts 1000. It seems to be the only one with the smaller diameter core that fits the Trasko.

My can size is rather narrow, so I just used a razor and cut away about 1/2" per side of the diameter and then unrolled until it was about 1/8" larger diameter than the trasko. If you have a larger diameter version then you may not have to unroll much. I also had to cut the length down to size. I used a razor knife and spun it on my wood lathe at low speed. I'm sure you could rig up somthing else or just squish it flat and slice through it with a knife.

I don't plan on changing it until it has 5k miles, unless the oil starts turning black then I'll change it earlier, but so far it seems to be running fine.

Actually, just FYI there was a 20 roll package of Scott 1000 at my local Target that was on sale about a month ago. I brought a ruler with me, and sure enough, these rolls were the same 1 3/8" diameter as the individually wrapped ones. Most of the smaller plastic shrunk Scott tissue packages I have found to contain 1 1/2" ID TP rolls. Good luck with your Traskos.

Cheers,

Mark

Just think,20 rolls of T.P. at 5k intervals should last me for quite some time!

My Dad's solution is to this is use a marker and draw the diameter you want on the TP end. Put it in the bathroom dispenser until colored TP is dispensed.

My goal is to not change the oil so that's why I plan 5k filter changes, it will probably work fine out to 10k, but for the extra $5 I figured it was good assurance. Once I get to 15k I plan to do an oil analysis, but that will be another 6-8 months.

I found it! I found the Scotts 1000 T.P. single roll 1 1/2 " core . Stator Brothers grocery store was selling it for .89 cents a roll as a clearance item.I`m going back to buy up the rest of it before its gone. The Trasco is now reinstalled with good old fashioned T.P. I will post on how it holds up since my oil already has 11,000 miles on it . Shooting for 15,000 on Mobil 1 and L.C.

If your looking for a small diameter core I found Kroger's 1000 TP has a smaller core and is tightly packed so you might not even have to remove any to use it.

When you start removing paper from the outer diameter of the roll you are removing a lot of filtering ability. I would have to draw the line when it comes to dealing with a nasty filter to change then removing paper and shortening the element to make it fit. Cutting the element with a knife? turning the TP on a lathe?

Thats the downfall of the Trasco. Its to small to fit a regular roll of T.P.Thats why they sell the filter media for $11.00.To expensive for me,I`m trying the resized T.P. to see if that works.

4.8 Silverado. Are you still using the Mobil 15-50. The reason I ask is because I have the same truck and was impressed by your u.o.a. Im coming up on 20,000 miles.Been using M-1 10-30 and changing at 5000 miles. Will pull my first sample soon.Love my truck.
Thanks,Mark

If the filter media is the same the big filter will always filter better than the little filter if the rate of flow is the same. Prices are funny. I stopped at NAPA awhile back to pick up a fuel filter for a customers Ford Powerstroke. By the time I paid for tax it was about 30 bucks. It was the type of filter that should never sell for more than 2 bucks. The big WIX elements to fit the big heavy duty diesel engines that are 7 1/2" wide and 15" long sold for 10 bucks and could filter 50 times better. If you cut open one of these cartridges you will find they are stuffed with shredded newspapers. Prices make no sense when it comes to oil filter elements.
I can get a 4 1/2" diameter roll of TP in the Motor Guard if I wrap it with a round of 2" polypropylene box sealing tape. Otherwise I unroll 10 rounds to make the roll 4 1/4". For the Scott 1000 sheet it's about 50 rounds. Motor Guard has their own elements that are a special filter paper. www.mcmaster.com has those for 6.21 catalog # 9841K93. The polyethyene core must be removed for hot motor oil. The Motor Guard elements are very strong and don't have a tendency to pinch in the gasket. TP will pinch in the gasket and cause a slow leak. The tape keeps the TP from folding out on the gasket as the tee handle compresses the element. These are for do it yourselfers.

RalphPWood , I`ve been playing with the Trasco for the fun of it on the engine side. The Trasco I have mounted for my transmission is a perfect match for me as far as size and filtering are concerned . I might be switching to a motorgard for my engine duties in the near future because of the larger filter media/extended drain intervals.I`m getting used to not changing my oil which is a great feeling to have !

Finfever, I replaced the Mobil 1 15/50 with 4 quarts Mobil 1 10/30 and 2 quarts Mobil 1 15/50. I`m at 11k on this OCI and plan to change it out at 15K.Also using Lube Control and Fuel Power.I will post a UOA on this OCI also. The 15/50 held up great for me.Good for at least 14 k the way I drive and didn`t need much make up oil compared to the mix I`m running now.Lost 1/2 mpg with it though. The 15/50 will make your vortec run silent.Next oil will be Mobil 1 0/40 if I can find it.I`m in La Verne so I guess were neighbors,Chris.

Hey Chris,
Thanks for the reply. The 10-30,15-50 mix was going to be my next try. My motor is absolutely silent w/ the Mobil 1.I look forward to your next uoa. The local Auto Zone on Holt Blvd. in Montclair has all flavors of Mobil 1 including 0-40 and even some GC.
Have a Great Day,
Mark

Iv`e been getting my Mobil 1 at Wallmart in the 5 gallon jug.I might try the green elixir if I can find a good price on it at Autozone.Mobil 1 has been as cheap as $3.66 a quart.Hard to beat that.

I paid 29.95 for a Stilco that took about 1/2 roll of TP in 1967. I used it on a Buick Electra 1961 for awhile. Then I used it on an automatic transmission. I saw one advertised in Popular Science a few years ago for 185.00. Normally those filters will keep ATF clean changing them once a year. If the transmission is in very good condition and isn't running too hot they can go a lot farther between changes. On the lube oil of a high performance V8 operating at high temperatures it might be a filter change every 1,000 miles to keep the wear rate as near as possible to zero with no routine oil drains.
In the old days you could tell the oil was dirty because it turned black. These new cars will fool you. The oil can be very dirty and still look good. Similar to ATF.
