Transporting gas

So once a year I take all my old fluids to the local hazardous waste disposal facility.

They require you to leave the fluids in the container that you have transported them in. This is no problem for things like oil, transmission fluid, coolant, etc. They are either in their original containers or a heavy duty Costco milk jug.

The problem I have is my left over 2-cycle gasoline. Every year I dump it in a 5 gallon gas can and plan on bringing it in when it gets full. The problem is I want to keep my 5 gallon gas can.

What can I safely transport and leave this old fuel in? Or am I stuck giving away my gas can every time I reach 5 gallons?

I would always dump it in the Dodge previously, but I have had a ton of fuel related problems with the Dodge. I'm sure dumping the 2-cycle in there had nothing to do with it, but I'd rather not take any chances.

The Honda is my wife's car and we will not be dumping anything in there, particularly since she thinks adding the 2-cycle is what "broke" the Dodge.

I dump all my OPE gas in my truck every 2 months, Have for years with NO ill effect at all.

You could just dump it in the honda when she's not looking........

Technically you'd have to bring it in an old gas can to be legal, other containers are not valid for transport.

Still though, use it in a lawnmower, or give it away to someone even, would be the best of both worlds.

why do you have so much old gas?
just mix it in a quart batch using a mix syringe for 2 cycle oil, or did I miss something.

You could enquire at a junkyard, there will be at least one hilbilly there who runs "junk car gas" in his beater and he'll gladly accept it.

Buy the 50:1 premix at HD. How much do you use in 2 years? Its a little over $5.00 per QT and its high test and E0. I have weed wackers, backpack blowers, chainsaws, but they are used when I need them, I bought a QT of 40:1 and another of 50:1 and suspect they will last me 2012.

Wow. How much do you mix up at a time? I suggest you acquire a 1 gallon can to mix up 2 cycle gas.

Add the old mix to your car or truck tank a little at a time. One gallon or less of old mix in a 15 or 20 gallon fill up will be no problem.

Ditto to splashing a bit of the old gas into your tank every fillup. If it's dirty, filter it first through a paper towel. Liquid BTU is too expensive to waste nowadays.

I mix my 2-cycle gas in an old liquor bottle that I calibrated for 32:1. Gas is filled to the first mark. Oil is filled to the second mark. This way I don't have to mix a whole gallon and the capped mix is kept fresh.

Why the term "hillbilly"? Do you mean poor or frugal. Bit degrading IMO

All right, let's use "scare quotes" on the term. If I could run free gas I'd do it!

Seems like the prudent solution is to manage your 2 cycle mix better to alleviate most of the left over fuel, as stated by many here.

If you really can;t or don't want to use it or give it away, dump it in with the used oil.

To my knowledge, gasoline is classified as a hazardous waste while used oil is not. Mixing gas into the oil could be illegal and maybe dangerous (i.e. - waste oil furnace).

Kestas, if I ever have the pleasure of visiting you in Motown, I will be VERY cautious to accept any drinks from you!

Put the old gas into a disposable HDPE or glass bottle with a screw cap that you happen to have. Rattle can the bottle red. Mark the bottle GASOLINE with black Sharpie.

Probably illegal....but I don't see that big of a problem....now, don't go dumping 2 gallons of fuel into say, 5 quarts of Motor oil.....or they will certainly "smell" the gas......

But when those oil recycler tankers pick up oil to be recycled, they almost HAVE to take in consideration the rare cars that inherently "run rich" :P So.....this gas in your engine oil, would mimmick that scenario kind of :P

But yea, really, can't go wrong slowly dispersing it into your fuel tank, at ~2 oz. per gallon, just to be on the safe side anyways :P

I've heard of people even doing this with old motor oil.....granted, cars aren't designed to be ran on motor oil....but same as my above scenario.......cars burn oil....so it'll sort of "mimmick" that scenario....at least, if the oil in the tank is minimal, is not 20W-50 (or thicker....), and so it doesn't restrict the fuel filter :P
