Hello all. I have a 2000 Ford Focus 2.0L Zetec that takes Mercon V Transmission Fluid for the Power Steering unit. Now I bought the car used so I am trying to flush all the fluids out and replace with new synthetic. I have already done my motor and trans. Now my question is would I be able to use a trans flush product to clean my power steering unit since it already has trans fluid in there in the first place? And what type of flush would I use? I know some people will recommend AutoRX but I was thinking of something off the store shelved.....but something good! Any suggestions will help. Thanks!

Were it mine, I'd suck as much as possible out of the reservoir and refill it with fresh.
Then I'd drive it a while, and repeat the process.
And then I'd do it again.
You haven't unplugged anything, nothing can go back on wrong or not tight enough, and you'll have changed most of the fluid.

Siphon/refill several times, as mentioned, and regularly is the best thing to do.
MerconV is a good enough flush all by itself.

Yes but wouldn't all the contaminants from the last fluid be stuck with my new fluid? I don't want that. I want all new fresh fluid. I've heard of places that suck all the fluid out of the entire system but I have not found any that do this. Would anyone in the Chicago area have any idea where I could go to have this done? I have heard that power steering systems are often over looked. I don't want to do that.

I already have AMSOIL ATF ready to go in but I don't know if I would benefit from a flushing component.

A local goodyear now has a BG Power Steering Flush Machine.

From what i have heard a new infusion of PS Fluid can cure the "morning sickness" that plagues older domestic units.

Also, the BG PS oil seems to be good stuff on paper...however it is mineral.

Anyone here run Redline or Royal Purple PS fluid by the way?

You can do your own PSF flush. This is how I have done it several times. Proceed at your own risk, I take no responsibility for your results, but just offer this as another option. Drain the reservoir, remove any insert screen filters. Disconnect the low pressure return hose, be really sure you have identified it properly, it will have a basic hose clamp. Plug the hose connection on the reservoir. Get a fluid/oil/gear oil hand pump for $5 at any auto parts store or Wal-Mart. Connect it to the hose to suck the PSF out and make the drain long enough to reach a container. The system will only hold about 1 or 2 quarts at most. Fill the reservoir and pump it through, I like to flush 3 or more quarts through then if it is really dirty, hook it up, drive a while then flush again. The entire flush process takes 10 minutes.

clutchless,
I do similar to you but just hook a plastic hose from hardware store to return line long enough to drain into catch pan. Start car for about 5 sec. add fluid do again until i get clear fluid.
Hint: I buy corks from hardware store to plug reservoir. Work great

FYI according to my 2000 Focus manual, the PS fluid is Mercon, not Mercon V. Look at the part #s.

You're right. I just went to www.myfordfocus.com and that is what it said also. That's good because AMSOIL I'm guessing probably covers that.

I'd RX it as Aaron did (see his post) and get it really clean and the seals replenished as well and then flush and change.

Who is Aaron and where is his post?
