Trans cooler

I run a trans cooler on my 3.8, 01 buick I use my car for work & avg. 130 - 150 miles perday. My transmission temps are around 150* to 165*. Not anywhere near stock, but is this too cool? should I have a thermostat on this?
 
I would think it best to run the aftermarket cooler before the stock cooler. That should help keep the transmission cool, but warm enough to evaporate off the water. Thoughts?
 
Water will evaporate at room temperature.
There are no combustion byproducts in the transmission. Other then humidity, there is no water in the transmission.

Your transmission is not too cool.
But, your location, with winter coming, might require some cardboard cover up in the coldest months.
Since you monitor temps, you'll be able to judge for yourself.
Anything under ~110*F should consider cooler coverup or a T-stat.

Which cooler/PN? Inline in series with OEM? before or after OEM cooler? or standalone? which ATF?

Rapid cool is what I have. I tried to place after the oem cooler in the rad. But I cut the wrong line its now before the rad. Q state dino was what I last but in. Color and smell test "seem normal". and no leaks. Oh, and yes I did use trans cooler line and barbed conections for the hookup. I had heard that 180* is optimal operating temp for the trans. I just don't want to harm something being too cool. I do cover it during the colder harsher months.

The coolant helps warm up the transmission fluid.
 
You won't harm anything by being too cool. Most newer transmissions monitor and adapt to transmission temperatures now. Thats something you can check in the FSM.

There is no optimal trans temp. I actually prefer the temp in the 140-150 range. Gives a good cushion when loading up on the transmission. Starting at 150 and spiking to 180 is safer then starting at 180 and spiking to 210!

Consider a full synthetic ATF, a blend, or even the DexronVI. They will flow better when cold compared to cheap DexronIII. That easier to flow fluid is less work for the engine and trans.
