Are their factory filters any good. Just wondered if it would be worth using on my scion over the pure ones and Fram tough guards I use now

If it's a cartridge it's probably cheaper to buy OEM at the dealer, I know I pay 5.60 for a filter at the dealer and double that at walmart.

If it's a spin on the OEM filters are fine but I use Purolators since they are cheap and easy to find. I would consider a P1 a step up from the OEM.

My Toyota Yaris liked AcDelco non-Ecore units best over purolator or Wix or Fram (most of which did not even fit correctly!) The Japanese OEM foam media filter ( that was factory part - on the car) ran best with the engine VVTi, then the Thai Denso service part WORST. That was in 2008-2010.

Depends on your definition of "factory".

The ones that come installed on the car from the factory are excellent, but they are very hard to find retail. The Toyota-branded ones sold by dealers are a very different construction and are nothing special unless you are hyper-concerned about potential denial of warranty for not using one.

The Toyota filter cartridge for my Prius is identical to the Purolator filter as far as I can tell. Both cost about the same.
Just steer clear of Fram.

You can buy 10 packs of the factory ones on ebay for under $5 each. I use the factory ones mostly. But the canister elements are all basically the same.

I have some valvetrain noise and that was the main reason I was asking. I was thinking about trying the toyota filters to see if it made any difference. I've seen the toyota filters with the "foam" media inside them, I wasn't sure if they even used that construction anymore. How do I tell if I've found the filter that would have come on the engine from the factory in Japan?

I believe the over the counter Toyota lower priced oil filters say "Made in Thailand" while the higher priced oil filter say "Made in Japan"

cptbarkley, do you get any excessive noise from the valves in your xb? I've got 15,000miles on mine, bought it with 5,000miles on it and its been noisey from day one. So far its had the dealer bulk oil in it (vwb is my guess), I've changed it with nextgen, and it currently has Fram Synthetic (basically Motorcraft Synthetic) in it right now. It was pretty noisy on the valvoline products, but the Fram stuff seemed to quiet it down pretty good until I got about 2,000miles into my oci, then it started to get noisy again. Its nice and quiet when the oil is cold, but gets worse as it heats up. I would think if it were excessive valve clearance, it would get better as things heat up and expand.

You may not be able to get the ones made in Japan. But I have had 5 Toyotas and never an issue with any of their filters.

When a cartridge filter is the oem filter reboxed, it likely will
cost more. Otherwise it shouldnt. Ive seen some that are better
simply by looking at the quantity of filter pleats and how straight they are.
I think K and N and Purolator's higher line are best, if available for your
application.

i only just bought my xb monday from carmax with 26k on the odo, the engine is very quiet. i hear very little valve train noise. i have no idea what the oil is in it either but its a fresh change for sure.

i dont know if its anything to worry about either, maybe post a video on youtube and make a dedicated thread in the maintenance section here and you should get lots of opinions

one thing i do know is first gen cr-v's need very loose exhaust valves to prevent burnt valve conditions, hence when set loose they sound very sewing machine-ish. again not really an issue here but just an example where its not a problem.

Go to a different Toyota dealer with a friend and test drive a new one and see if the sound is the same. BTW, my kids have a 2.4L Toyota and it is noisy cold and quiet when up to operating temp. I have used many different oil filters and none make any difference. ( I do all of their oil changes)

I had a 2011 XB before this one that ran nice and quiet, and then around the 22,000mile mark, it started making the same noise in the valvetrain. I had always run PYB and either a Fram Tough Guard filter or a black Bosch filter. The last oci however I had switched to PP 0w20 and a Purolator classic. I immediatly switched back and it did quiet up some, but not completely. I had it to the dealer and they said they didn't hear any noise. I saw this one on their lot when I picked mine up and wound up trading mine in on it as it was the exact color and had the 5spd that I was looking for the first time around. Anyways, my 2012 had 5300miles on it when I got it and has sounded the same as my old one did when I got rid of it since I got it. I was beginning to think that maybe it is just normal though as I've heard honda's that sound like it does and that is supposedly normal on them
