Hey Guys, to add to your collection of oil filter porn
blush.gif

I recently took over the maintenance of my Dad’s Lexus RX300 with a 3.0L 1MZ-FE engine.

Oil Filter was in service for approximately 2 years and 5 months. 14,000 Km, approx. 9K miles. Majority of the miles were “severe duty” short trips of 4 miles or less. I believe the last oil fill was Shell Helix Ultra 15W50. Current fill: Mobil1 15W50 with Fram Ultra XG 3600 (Oversized)

Overall, the filter media held up really well but the nitrile ADBV didn’t do so well. It was starting to get hard and it didn’t really prevent the backflow when I shook the oil filter and pretty much drained the can of oil before I cut it open.

No visible black crud, all the soot was suspended in the oil which was pretty dark.

I mangled the can a fair bit getting it of as it was screwed on tight. Unfortunately, I was not able to pry out the bypass valve easily due to the can deformation.

Overall, I am impressed by the build quality of the Original Toyota filter but I would not use this filter for such an extended OCI (2-2.5 years)due to the nitrile ADBV. If it was silicone, I would.

Enjoy!

Filter quality looks pretty good.
Is this filter made in USA?

BTW, you posted this in the wrong section!
Theres a sub forum just for filter porn.

Oops. Sorry for posting in the wrong section. My first time posting. Mods please move post.

Actually, I live in the tropics now, 1 degree north of the equator. Weather all year round doesn't get any less than 90 degrees with 100% humidity.

Filter is a Denso made in Thailand. If I run Toyota filters next time, I'll run them a year then switch filters. Oil still looks good. We do occasional long trips, so the fuel/water should burn off. I doubt there is much fuel dilution.

Unfortunately UOA is not as easily obtained here.

One thing I notice on these and the Denso first time fit, which you may want to try in order get a silicone valve, is the good and perfect fit of the adbv on the baseplate. It keeps the element hole sealed very well and the element cannot move side to side. I am not seeing so much this construction finesse on most other filter brands.

Yet we see "informed comments" here in which nobs claim OEM Toyota filters are "junk", ect. When one sees a blanket statement like it's from an idiot.

Nice photographs. 2.5 years is a long time for an oil filter to be in service. Looks it held up nicely.

That must be why base plates and a spring are not needed. Fewer parts is a nice feature.

I use to use the Toyota filters on my Tacoma, but the efficiency wasn't high enough for me. Ya, ya ... it won't smoke your motor and Toyota knows what they are doing.

What brand filter are you using now? Thinking of switching filters on the 2012 Camry which calls for 10k oci's. Running MC filters on the 2005 Matrix and happy with those.

These filters do have a spring to keep the components sealed. The relief valve is showing through the spring. The Denso filter does have a silicon ant-drain back valve. I guess TMC doesn't think that is necessary. I have used the Toyota Denso filter for years and believe they are a very good filter. Also, the Denso filter uses end caps.

I now run either WIX/NAPA Gold or Fram Ultra. Motorcraft filters are good too. But if you plan on running 10K + OCIs, I'd probably go with the full synthetic Ultra.

There are some Toyota's filter that definitely do not look as good as this one. Like the 90915-YZZG1 that is commonly used in almost all their fleet.

Looks like a HONDA ** FILTECH ** A01

very simular to a A01

Anyone else think its similar to a Honda OEM AO1 ??

If it had Silicone ADBV it would be almost exact IMO.

Oh, I would definitely say it looked like the FILTECH Honda filters. As noted, the silicon ADBV being a difference and I'm sure there are probably some differences in filtration efficiency. Although, we all recall some of the tests on Honda/Toyota oil filters wrt their efficiency on the infamous Amsoil EaO oil filtration study graph.
