Been around awhile, but never had the need to post. All my questions are usually answered with some reading, however now I'm confused. I work PT at Advance Auto parts and they have a great sale this month on 5 qts of Mobil 1/w mobil 1 oil filter for $29.99. I have been using 5w30 since my Tacoma was new and noticed their computer systems now show 0w20 or 5w20 back spec'd for 2006 and newer 4.0 V6 . I emailed Toyota but haven't gotten a reply as of yet. I'm holding off on buying until I know for sure.

Does anyone know if this info is accurate????

Thanks,
John

it is correct, they have back spec'd quit a bit of engines for 0-20 and 5-20 use. Mainly cuz they are starting to use 5-20 in all of their engines, i would stick with 5-30, its been a good oil for you and will continue as time and wear goes on. i dont really think your gonna save anything by switching to a 5-20, gas mileage wise. so there you have it for what its worth

Thanks Petrou, That's what I'll probably do..

Arcographite, I love Rotella T and use it in practically everything else but the 15w40. Finding 10w30 is like searching for the Holy Grail..lol I'd have to special order it....

I can assure you that you will not save any money that you will ever notice on gas in a Tacoma by useing a 20wt.! M1 5W30 is close to a 20wt. to start with and it shears in use so you are already useing one and not saving a dime. If you have a 4X4 the amount of drag from all the extra parts and the ground clearance will defeat any attempt at saving money with oil! Even Lubrizol says that it is silly to try to save fuel with oil!On top of that any aggressive driving while the engine is cold again cancels out the fuel savings since it is only the first 20-30 minutes of driving that any real fuel savings is experinced by useing an oil that has less viscosity.

Get manual locking front hubs. I'm not sure if it can save gas, but it greatly extends CV boot/joint life (when in 2wd.)

I ran 5w20 for the last two intervals in my 2006 Tacoma before I sold it. Ran great. I would run it for the life of the vehicle if I still had it.

I wish I would have kept the email that Toyota sent me about 4 months ago (but I didn't), but I was asking them about longer OCI's (beyond 5k) and 20wt oils for the 4.0 FRFE. I got the reply that other engines had been moved back to 20wt oils, but that 4.0 had not. They strictly directed me to stay with a 30wt oil if I wanted my 60k mile powertrail warranty to stay in effect and stay with the 5k/6mon OCI rules.

I am currently running Mobil 1 0w30 and the engine really, really likes it.

If it starts close to a 20 and shears anyway, then really he should be able to run a 20 weight if he wants, no?

FWIW, the 2010 version on my FJ cruiser is spec'd for 0W-20. Basically the same engine with VVT-i.

I have the 2.7 engine in my 2006 Tacoma and I have switched back and forth between 20 and 30 wt and there isn't a whole lot of difference.

The 4.0 has been known to be noisy for some. So i've been hesitant to try a thinner oil in mine. I just go off what the fill cap says, which is 5w30.
Alls well with it, and no complaints from me on a noisy engine.

+1 Mine as well QTP 5w30 is running just fine. No noise at all.

I do agree that some are noisy, My wife has the 06 4runner with the same engine and her's is much quieter than my Taco. There's also a big difference in the shifts in all gears, I like her's much better. There both 4x4's but I attribute the differences to gearing.

They both use the same oil and filters, so that's not it..

The only weights that are easy to find here are straight 30 or 15w40, unless you want to use syn 5w-40... The only way to get 10w30 is to order it and you have to pay full price, no sales incentives, bummer!!

Keep looking at "REAL" auto parts stores and truck stops and tractor sales. I found mine at: Robbins and/or Sanel. Not Advance or Pep boys or Kmart.
