Picked up three quarts of Quaker State Q High-RPM syntheic blend 5W30 SM on clearance. Need a fourth quart for a full sump and a fifth for eventual top-off. Will be used from now through New Years' when I'll dump for full-syn for the winter. Durability is not important as it will get dumped at around 3k miles. Decent cold-cranking and fuel economy are my goals. This will be my "transitional fall/early winter" fill on a 2000 Saturn SL.

I have the following 5w30 in the shrine, am looking for a complimentary additive pack from something cheap. Following are arranged with cheapest top-offs at top.

Car & Driver (Target) 5w30 SL
SuperTech 5w30 SL
Chevron Supreme 5w30 SL
Motorcraft 5w30 blend SM
Supertech GRPIII "full syn" 5w30*
Valvoline full-syn 5w30 SL*
M1 "classic" 5w30 SM*
*would prefer to save for dead of winter

You'll notice very little other Shell/Pennzoil/QS in there which would be my first choice for blending. I can get QS winter blend at Big Lots for $1.89 but would prefer to use something cheaper from in-stock.

Why did you buy the 3 qt's in the 1st place if it wouldn't do a complete oil change?

I did the same thing earlier this year. Bought 12 qt's of the SL version of QS HHP on clearance and needed 2 more quarts to get enough for all eventual oil changes. So picked up 2 qt's of QS synthetic (also on clearance) to add in later. If I were you I'd buy some QS dino so you keep the mixture within the same company's base stock.

Otherwise, of the list you cited, I'd use the Motorcraft, another syn blend.

Because it was on clearance, and all that was on the shelf. Finding a use for it is secondary. Does that make me less of a BITOGer?

Though I might pop my head in another WM and see if they have this stuff on clearance there too.

Am trending towards topping off with the car and driver as its weak add pack, whatever it is, won't clash with the QS.

I don't particularly care about the high-rpm gimmickry as long as it's got a robust base which I'm sure it does.

Big Lots has some PZ Blend. How different could it be? I'd take a chance and get it over with. Otherwise, look at VOAs and try for something with a similar add pcak.

I would mix it with the chevron. It looks like the least costly of the bunch and it is very simular to pennzoil in additives and its also group II+.

My shopping trip started at big lots where they had until recently had Kendall GT-1 synthetic blend at $1.59 which I was going to buy and mix with my 2 quarts of motorcraft. They ran out of that and only had/have QS winter blend 5w30 for $1.89. No pennzoil at mine anymore. Then I went to wally's across the street and got the Q.

QS winter blend just about perfect for my needs and should mix well with the Q, but is slightly expensive.

can you buy it not on clearance? if so, do that. If not, buy the closest QS equivalent and add that.

Poorly worded question on my part. Sorry.

What I meant was why buy mixtures? I've passed up really good clearance prices on really good oils several times because there is only a quart or two available. I'm not sure I gain anything by mixing different manufacturer's blends versus sticking with one (possibly more expensive) oil all the time. As a result, in those rare occurances when I do mix, I tend to stick to a similar oil by the same manufacturer. Mobil 1 5w30 with Mobil 1 0w20, for example. But, that's just me.
