No, it's your choice. Some cars require synthetic oil, so there would be no scam there. I use synthetic but extend my normal drain intervals to accommodate the extra cost of the synthetic. In most cars that do not specify synthetic as a requirement, then regular conventional oil in the proper spec is fine. Your choice to do what you wish, based on the advice of the owner's manual....

They are right and they are wrong. Some cars don't need synthetic oil. Some do. So because a mechanic wants to fill your 'vette or Ferrari or BMW with synthetic oil, it's automatically a scam? No, of course not.

Too broad of a brush stroke, writer is ignorant. Article to be taken with a grain of salt.

Last comment: Most "mechanics" don't know all that much about tribology.

The askmen guy used quite a few words to say nothing.

Well if my post is about nothing, then what is your post about?

I didn't think your post was about nothing, I thought you were showing us an article from a clueless askmen guy who wrote a short article that said nothing.

The only scam is when the dealership tries to charge like 80 bux for a Syntec oil change (which is up to 5 quarts). Now THAT is a scam.

I am mostly syn oil user, yet I agree with the Askmen post: most people can use correct viscosity of it safely for engines that do not explicitly require a syn oil per manufacturer. Gear oil also does not have to be syn: in most cases it adds little benefit.

I use my vehicles up to 500k, need better up time ratio and in my case have fewer seals and gasket failures, but my application is different. Up time is my primary concern.

And I do not find their statement verbose.

Using Synthetic oil is not a scam. A scam is when you pay for Synthetic oil and they pour dino oil into your engine instead. Then charge you for a Synthetic Oil Change.

I use syn to extend my oil changes, save on engine wear, maybe get more mpg, and (gulp)help the environment

Synthetic by itself is not a scam. The scam comes from convincing people who don't need it that they should upgrade to it, then completely ripping people off on the price of the synthetic upgrade, then telling them that once they switch to synthetic they need to stay with synthetic, and then telling them they still need to change their oil every 3k-4k miles.

That's very true. Many cars require it,some vehicles like Ford pickups require synthetic gear oil also.

HAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This made my day!!!

Although synthetic definitely won’t harm your engine, there’s no point in using it in the 200,000-mile car you’re going to replace soon either.

........I'm about to send them a letter. My car has over 200,000 miles, I use synthetic and my engine is silky smooth. Obviously the editors at "Ask Men" are girly men.

This...

It seems some are missing the point of what it means to scam some one. Required or not is irrelevant.

My 2c's worth:

(1) this is written by a writer that has very little technical knowledge (and a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing, so his credibility is to be questioned.

(2) while I agree with most of what he posted (10 points), 2 things that I strongly disagree are: (a) synthetic motor oil: there are engines/cars out there that has to run on synthetic motor oil, and (b) cabin air filters has to be inspected/replaced whenever possible (just replaced mine on my wifey's 2AZFE after covering over 40,000kms, and boy was it pretty much clogged with dust, feathers, dandilion seeds, and even have some small insects crawling out from the crease...

My Ford dealer charges $2 more per quart for synthetic than synthetic blend. I change twice a year for a total of 10 quarts. It's worth the $20 to me.
