No love for GC?

Looks like you need a 40-50wt?

Amsoil..like it for quality and a lot of different "custom" formulations. Very flexible products to particular applications.

Redline...Torco..Motul...Penzoil.RP..Valvoline...Castrol...M-1...they all offer a lot over conventionals...some better than others..

GC
M1 TDT 5W40
Motul X-lite 0W30
Rotella synthetic 5W40
Amsoil DEO, SSO, others?
RenLube Biosyn 5W40
Some others such as Shaeffers, Brad Penn, Fuchs/Silkolene, etc. left out only due to lack of data

Not one of those I would use in a new Honda, Ford, Mazda, etc

Invalid list.....noy really invalid, just narrow. Why AFL over DEO for example?

Best for what? Have you actually used any of these oils or are you just having a wet dream about them? (or worse, basing your "best" on how BITOG folks write about them???)

That's true. I assumed he was referring to some Euro car that loved 40 weights based on the list. It didn't specify that though.

The thread was started so members could post their personal preferences for synthetic oil, so there would be a wide selection to choose from depending on the application. There are members whose primary concern is efficiency and longevity and there other members such as myself who drive hard daily and have custom applications that cruise at 3k rpms on the highway. I'm in agreement with Redline, Porsche, and Mercedes that 30wt oil should not be used for "sustained high speed use". I do believe that a country that allows their citizens to drive as fast as they want in the winter has a bit higher standards for the oil they use. If you don't have a top 10 to contribute and have something to say, please send me a pm. Respectfully yours, noi8u.

Beware of another thick vs. thin argument! ha ha.

I am interested in testing how a shear stable 30 weight would survive in the fuel diluting, oil destroying VW/Audi 2.0 FSI. The GC UOAs we have on that engine look pretty good in terms of shear relative to some of the 502 40 weight oils.

Castrol Edge
PP
Castrol Syntec
QS Synthertic
Valvoline Synpower
Napa Synthetic
Supertech Syn
Maxlife syn
Chevron/havoline synthetic
Citgo synthetic
Amsoil

Won't touch M1 unless it is near free and then I would only use it for yard equipment on its last leg :) Might make OK bar and chain oil too.

Bookem' Dano!

I was wondering if I should just conspicously leave it off my list or rub salt in the wound. I like rubbing salt in the wound like Mobil 1 removes iron

Bad news for PP! My PP 5-20 seems done at 5.5 months and about 4,000. Slight fuel mileage drop and burned 2 ounces in the last 750 miles which is unusual in my car. May have to go back to M1-EP. It went 10.0 months and 5,300 before this happened.Looks like EP may be better for longer runs.

Here's my totally subjective list.
Oils ranked by brand in general order. Individual mixtures may punch well above or below their brand's average.

Redline (Great base, massive additives. Just about any of their oils are superb.)

Amsol (Good base and ZDDP. Maybe a little light on secondary adds.)

M1, PP, Edge. (IMO, these lines are about equal, depending on the oil in question. Slight edge to M1, based on average additive rate and several stand-out mixes. US Edge mixtures look rather average. )

Syntec (Apart from GC, I don't see any startling products.)

Syn Power, Quaker offerings. (Flash and pour points, etc. imply somewhat 'plain vanilla' base stocks. Additives don't stand out either.)

I'm not sure just what to make of the Edge lineup. Castrol botched the roll-out and follow-up advertising so badly, I have to wonder if the incompetence is company wide. I guess I'd rate it roughly = with PP.

What did I forget?
