Too late to change to a synthetic?

I honestly think that conventional oil has come so far, its almost on par with synthetic oils. If its had regular oil changes, you could switch to synthetic at any time. I wouldnt look for significant gains though. I think synthetic oils may last longer and go for a extended period of time without as much additive drop-out. Conventional and synthetic both meet the SM classification so they are both comparable.

I agree, there is simply no need to make fun of the guy's car. There is nothing wrong with the Neon, in fact they are quite reliable cars! My uncle had over 250,000 miles on his when he got rid of it and the guy I sit beside at work has over 200k on his.

The post is useless as far as this thread, but useful in the fact we can see what "type" of member and how "factual/unbiased" his mindset is.

Will be useful in other threads...

I agree on the useless post. Motorcraft Blend 5w20/5w30 is a great oil and is the best bargain out there.

My 250+k miles 1994 LS400 had dino and syn back and ford without any excessive oil consumption with either, 1/2 qt every 3-4k miles. When I had syn in the engine I extended OCI to 12-14k/12mo instead of 6-7k/6mo.

And to answer the OP's question we need to know the reasoning behind wanting to switch to synthetic? If you still plan keeping the same oil change interval then it's not really worth the extra expense to go with synthetic, as conventional oil changed every 5000 miles can still give you a very long engine life (especially with the Neon's reliable engines) But if your plan is to go with synthetic in order to run longer intervals, then by all means go for it!

i use synthetic in my late brother's colt, which has 214,000 miles on the clock. he fed it a steady religious diet of castrol conventional, every 2500 miles, for a total of 100 oil changes, which cost a total of about 1600 dollars. right now, i run in it 50:50 synthetic (group 3), and the modern conventional (group2). the vehicle runs like a dream.
this is the 1.5l mitsubishi mirage/colt.

It's never too late to switch to synthetic. And that's a fine car despite your detractors. Whether you need to do it is another matter, but there is no "too late to switch."

+1, and if you don't like it then change to something else. This will be classified as OCD BITOGer-isms

What is you reasoning for switching? To extend the oil change interval? Just for want of something "better"? Just know that most advertised synthetic ARE NOT and do not provide much, if any, benefit to anyone who does a 4-5 K oil change interval in a temperate climate.

You can change now, no problem. But expect some cleaning of the rings and the engine for the first 4 or 5 OCI's. Then you can start extending the intervals to 10-15K miles+.

That's good advice Pablo, especially considering it's been on "various dinos" since new, so the cleanliness of the engine may possibly not be quite so perfect.

So your brother wasted a lot of money doing 2500 mile oil changes. His engine would be in the same condition if he spent only $800 doing 5k OCIs.

He would have saved even more following the OLM with conventional. And the engine would be doing what it is doing now.
