Came across this on Mobil's Photo/Testamonial section. I love the Lamborhghini part. I wonder if this guy is lurking around here. Blackstone labs has become popular of all a sudden. He mentioned it in the paragraph below.

quote:

Vehicle: 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX
Mileage: 96,000 miles
Owned by: Jim Leonard, Male, IT Manager, Cary, North Carolina
"Bought in 1998 as a used lease car, it has all-wheel drive and the engine is turbocharged. Over the past few years I’ve modified the suspension, engine and other parts to produce a 400-hp performance machine. Track day at VIR had me passing a Lamborghini, as it couldn’t pull away in the corners. In several different ways, Mobil 1 has made me a loyal customer. The 4G63 turbo engine has a reputation for clicking lifters and dreaded crankwalk. When I purchased the car, Mobil 1 became its only oil. I have it analyzed by Blackstone labs at each change. Mobil 1 is the gear lube that goes into the transfer case and rear LSD as well. The wear rate, as determined by Blackstone labs is minimal on this engine. Given the doubling of horsepower and track time, this is great. I use 0W-40, by the way."

I had a good laugh too, but then got to thinking.

At a track day you have people with a wide variety of driving experiance and you have people with a wide variety of how hard they are willing to push their cars.

The guy in the Lambo was probably some old rich guy who didn't want to crash his car and who didn't even realize rice-boy was racing him.

he's talking about a club's lapping day event, I think.

I have passed BMW's, Porsches, Ferrari's and corvettes in a non-turbo Rx-7 at lapping events at Mosport, Shannonville and Watkins Glen. My car had, max, 210BHP.

Am I bullshitting?

I can't say that this particular Mitsubishi driver is telling the truth or is not, but I find his claim entirely within the bounds of plausibility. He lists the corners as his advantage over the Lambo, and if the Lambo was two wheel drive and running street tires, I think he very likely could be telling the truth. I ran my bone stock WRX at Lime Rock, and Porches, Corvettes, and Camaros would dust me on the front straight, but I easily caught back up in the corners.
Also, if you think every person who drives a Japanese car is a ricer, perhaps you should put down your gun and your bible (a joke, get it?) and see how many of them used to be die-hard american car drivers. http://www.buschurracing.com/biography3.html

Those of you who have been to track days know that the story can be entirely true. I just got in from a lapping day at Lime Rock. Who would have guess I passed a z06, STI, and a Cobra with my lowly VW GTI?

Some of you guys are idiots when it comes to modern day performance cars.

Yea, and that lowly Eagle Talon at the top of the list? STREET CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How'd you like to go from a dig against a car running 8.7s at 165 mph on DOT aproved tires? I've witnessed about 20 times a local DSM guy who runs 11.5s at 120 mph, absoluely rape trailor queen dragsters at the local boony races. Yup, I'd feel like a dumbass getting passed in a Lamborghini by a "slow" Mitsubishi

And please, don't even come back with the "top fuel" motor still is faster than turbo 4 banger.

I have a video of a Toyota MR2 Turbo making 756 RWHP.....if anyone wants to see it, post your addy here.
Next time you pull up next to a ricer, check out the car and the driver.....if it's got a lot of gimmicks and a big wing and a bunch of flashy shi'it, it most likely is nothing but a ricer. If the guy seems serious and eager to race you in a clean and good sounding machine, then don't put any money upfront until you find out the whole story. I've seen 4-bangers duke it out with the big V8s.

heres a nice little video of a turbo integra type-r pasing a ferrari at the A1 ring in Austria. the guy says, "I was 4th place of the cars which has timing hardware. This was about 20 cars mixed from Porsche turbo to Ferrari 360 modennas and some other Porsches, etc.".

heres another good one. turbo civic w/ stock dx ehaust vs. modded viper r/t 10.
