My wife is German. Her dad had been drafted in the German military in WWII at age 15, and he served on the eastern front in an anti-aircraft unit. He was wounded, made his way to the US lines, and he said that initial conditions for German POWs were horrible and that thousands died. Evidently the US was punishing the POWs, but when they saw what was happening they quickly improved conditions. He said that he was then given excellent care, and as a result for the rest of his life was an ardent supporter of the US.
After I got out of the Marines I continued to receive the Gazette, and recall articles about former German panzer commanders giving lectures at the Naval War College. We were trying to learn from some of the best as the US needed to do something different to counter the massive Soviet army.
So yup, the German military is a different oranization now.
