To flush or not to flush

Got a Peugeot 307 1.6 16v petrol 2005. Bought it 4 weeks ago.
Got a service history. Low mileage 32000 miles. Looks like its been used for a lot of short trips though.
It had creeped over 25 months since the last oil change but only done 2800 miles.
Soon as I got it I changed the oil.

It's a bit tappety on start up for the first couple of minutes.
Fine once warmed up. with 5w40.

I am going to change the oil to Total Quartz 0w30.

I have been given a Forte engine flush recommended by my garage.

I'm in a 50/50 frame of mind whether to use it or not.
I don't expect it to be sludged up or crusty at all but the tappets maybe a bit varnished up due to the low mileage.

Do I use the forte or not before changing to 0w30?
hmmm

If you changed the oil 4 weeks ago with 5w40, and are doing it again with Total Quartz 0w30, Id say youre kind of flushing already with pretty good cleaning oils...

What are the directions for use? I read recently on here about a Toyota product. Where you pour it in, let it idle for 15 minutes, drain and refill with fresh oil. If it's that simple go for it and report back!

A flush is a [censored] shoot. If you happen to loosen a chunk of sludge and it plugs an oil drain going back to the pan your engine is toast. But that is unlikely to happen.

I would use quality oil at reasonable OCI and it will clean the engine slowly which is always batter.

Not always a problem. And my engines have a lot of paths back to the sump, so plugging one or even two may never be noticed.

No such thing as always better. Some instances may dictate a meaner product, some may not want to run the engine for miles and miles with dirt and crud flowing around till it gets to the filter. There are effective cleaners that work fast and are safe, too...

Done the flush with Forte. Warmed the engine up and then idled it for just 15 minutes with the flush in.
Let it drain well and then poured in more oil to wash out more until it was coming out golden from the sump.

Bosch filter fitted instead of a cheap crosland one.

We'll see tomorrow once I get it out. Too late now.
I'll also inspect the drained oil in the daylight.
Bought one of those easy drain oil pans that are a pan/8litre can in one. Unfortunately I didn't take out the air hole tap so it overflowed a bit when it rushed out of the sump hot!!

I don;t expect any miracles, just hope it ticks a little less on start up and knowing it's a better Peugeot recommended oil more of a piece of mind.

pulling my leg? Sorry no offence but I get a lot of Brit sarcasm on other forums this side of the pond

If not then thanks. Hope so tomorrow.

I may be paranoid but I noticed the last time I did a flush the oil I put after the flush was quickly sheared (probably by flush residue).
The Total is on the heavy side of a xW30 but you should keep an eye on oil consumption, atleast for a few time.

Quite a possibility. Did you flush the sump out with any new oil after draining the flushed oil?

after I drained out the oil I added some new oil with the sump plug off just to rinse out any flush contaminated oil sitting in the bottom of the sump. I think the % of residue would be so small.

Both of these are true.

To throw in my two pence worth..

I have no problem using a flush product IF it's necessary, otherwise don't bother.

To be sure if it's necessary remove the cam cover and see how it looks in there..

Also think of how many contaminants the oils are designed to deal with just from normal combustion and daily use.
I don't expect a small trace of used flush will affect it in any way.

I did, but the car has an oil cooler with looong pipes so it never get rid of old oil, no matter how hard you try. But in your engine there is no oil cooler, nor oil/water exchanger (I think, may be wrong). There may be some small oil "reservoirs" around the camshafts, but the % of oil residue is negligible.
