Timing belt in oil

Design flaw. As the belt wears chunks of rubber fall off which clogs the oil pump screen and kills the engine. Unlike a dry belt there is no way to check a wet belt for wear.

Too bad chains wear and break too.
Chains break because of long OCI's, poor design and/or poor materials. Some MB engines need a new set of chains every 100k miles. To me that's ridiculous.

I guess the chains innmy MB cars didn’t get the memo.

But to think that chains don’t have issues, even with good design and good upkeep, is playing ostrich imo.

I think VW has an engine with an oil bathed timing belt as well. Maintenance interval is supposed to be 150k. Personally I refuse to buy any engine with a timing belt at this point, too many chain options out there.
The EA211 uses a belt but it isn't a wet belt design. Those are known to go 200K+ without issue. I feel better having a belt vs. chain in our VW as they don't seem to have chains ironed out yet.
